I have been a resident of Great Neck for 32 years, and for 32 years have enjoyed the beauty and safety of my neighborhood.
Beach Road, where I live, is a bucolic, quiet street lined by trees and surrounded by fields. I was astonished to learn that the Great Neck school system has unilaterally decided to convert a field at the end of my block into a 90 spot parking lot so that the Great Neck North seniors don’t have to be bothered with school busses, car pools, or walking the extra two blocks to available parking.
The amount of extra traffic that will arise, the lack of safety as 90 young drivers will suddenly be driving their individual cars to school ( a luxury most high school students don’t have), the industrialization of our beautiful greenery, have all been pushed through quietly with the other improvements planned for the school system — without any communication with those of us who live here.
We, the neighbors of Great Neck North, should have been made a party to the decision making process, and our needs addressed as well.
I, for one, am heart broken at the planned blight on my beautiful neighborhood and fear for my young grandchildren who live with me.

To everyone who says the community wasn’t notified about this parking expansion — this is what happens when you fall asleep at the wheel. Don’t blame the school board.
Among the many caring and responsible people who were publicizing the bond vote, one REPEATED FACT was the advice to view the complete list on the GNPS website. If you did not care to do so, and chose only to focus on the “bigger ticket” items which were the more frequent topic of conversation… THAT’S ON YOU.
Furthermore, even if you never visited the GNPS website, I am absolutely certain that the parking lot was one of the items on the bulleted list of projects sent out by the GNPS prior to the vote. Boo hoo. Why have you reserved your outrage for a time TEN TO TWELVE MONTHS following the vote?
