The current chaos in our once stable political system is difficult to process. Inconceivable as it sounds, there have been two assassination attempts on the same major party American presidential candidate in as many months (nothing comparable has happened for nearly 50 years).

As others have observed, much of the blame lies with the apocalyptic “Trump is an existential threat” rhetoric heedlessly tossed around by Biden, Harris, and others. But I believe the explosive situation is also attributable to the naked abuse of power by the Democratic legal establishment.

The term “Lawfare” is now so trite and overused that we have become desensitized to its gravity.

In truth it is merely a euphemism. The more candid term for what Democratic officials have done to the justice system in their quest to neutralize Mr. Trump is simply “corruption.” And it is not going too far to add “a tyrannical abuse of authority.” Equal protection of law, due process, fair trial, impartial judging, freedom of speech, presumption of innocence – the essential elements of justice – have all given way to the Democrats’ relentless determination to destroy their most formidable political enemy.

No distortion of criminal or civil law has been too ludicrous to adopt, no legal strategy too blatantly partisan to pursue, no previously inviolable prosecutorial norm too indispensable to trample under foot and no constitutional right too sacred to cast aside.

It cannot be reasonably disputed that the blindfold has been torn from Justice in Mr. Trump’s case. No one else would have ever been subject to the bizarre legal contortions used to target him (although they may be in the future). The Democrats’ message to the American people is unmistakablv clear: Trump is an “outlaw” in the original common law sense of the term. That is, he is someone who is deemed to be outside the usual protection of the law which secures the life, liberty, and property of other citizens.

And the consequences of such outlawry are dire: the outlaw has no legal rights and no entitlement to mercy or humanity at the hands of his fellow citizens. Anyone who encounters the outlaw may injure, abuse, or kill him with impunity. Fittingly, the other legal name for this condition is “civil death” – a status which considers an individual as good as dead to the law. That is the very attitude the Democrats have fostered towards Mr. Trump.

So, it should surprise no one that that there are individuals who have taken Democrats’ message to heart and concluded that partisan political murder, while usually an abomination, is justifiable in the case of Mr. Trump. If it is acceptable to corrupt the previously sacrosanct judicial system for political purposes, then maybe killing for political purposes is okay too.

I cannot say that the conscious intention of the Democrats was to encourage Trump’s assassination. But they clearly knew the risk of their lawless acts. They just did not care. Openly manipulating the institutions of justice to destroy the opposing party’s nominee is unprecedented and monumentally destabilizing to the entire country and political violence is an inevitable consequence.

Blakeman outlines school safety plan after 80 Nassau County threats

There have been 80 threats to Nassau County schools within the past year. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman on Tuesday outlined the current school safety plan in place to protect children across the county.

“There’s nothing more important than the safety of our children, especially when they’re going to school,” Blakeman said at a news conference at the David S. Mack Intelligence and Training Center in Garden City. “To me, as a parent, that’s something that I would consider number one in my priority as county executive.”

The 80 school threats faced this year alone are nearly quadruple last year’s 23 threats. Fear of potential school violence is being felt throughout Long Island; police have reportedly responded to at least two dozen threats in Suffolk County in only the past month.

In Nassau, there have been threats to schools in Freeport, Hempstead, Uniondale, and Westbury, with a threat made to a Valley Stream school just this morning. Kellenberg Memorial High School endured four consecutive days of bomb threats, the investigation into which is ongoing.

There are current emergency plans in place for the county police department and within schools themselves, but for those school safety plans to be effective, individuals must also play a role.

“We’re here to show you what we’re doing,” Blakeman said, “And we’re here to ask for your help.”

Nassau County Police’s School Safety Plan

Nassau County was recently named the safest county in America by U.S. News and World Report, which Blakeman attributed to his administration’s emphasis on policing. His administration has hired 200 new police officers in the last two years and will be hiring more, as well as correction and probation officers.

“Our headcounts are up above anything that they’ve been in the last decade, and we will continue to do so because we take the safety and security of our county very, very serious.

A new “training village” designed to give Nassau County police experience in real-world situations will open behind the Mack Intelligence Center later this year. The facility will feature banks, religious institutions, a train station, and perhaps most importantly, a school. There, officers can practice their school safety plan by responding to live shooter scenarios.

Additionally, the county has initiated Operation Overwatch, a program in which four units of five patrol cars go “randomly” throughout the roads of Nassau County. This is to make sure that people know they’re out there and that they’re available if an emergency necessitates a rapid response from additional officers, Blakeman said.

The K-9 unit is ready to be used in the case of any explosive threat, as seen recently with Kellenberg Memorial High School, and patrol officers are out every day, Blakeman said, in areas around the 550 — 400 public and 150 private — schools in Nassau County.

As part of the school safety plan, each police car is also equipped with a sledgehammer, tactical vests and helmets, a defibrilator, a kit to stop bleeding, and other emergency equipment, said Commissioner of Nassau County Police Patrick Ryder at the news conference, so they don’t have to waste time in an emergency by waiting for additional supplies to come.

“So every one of our officers has no reason to stop and wait for anybody else,” Ryder said.

Further, Homeland Security visits county schools every day, testing each one every year for its school safety plan and emergency preparedness. Emergency services, too, are always present.

“You may not see them but they’re there,” Blakeman said. “Same as our Bureau of Special Operations, which is our SWAT team. They are strategically located throughout the county to respond immediately to any threat.”

Increasing School Security

Every public and private school in Nassau County is now outfitted with Rave App, a kind of “panic button” that students or faculty can hit in an emergency. An integral part of each school safety plan bypasses 911 and goes straight to the police supervisor’s desk.

“Once the Rave App is activated, we send in the cavalry,” Blakeman said.

School infrastructure has also changed to keep up with safety threats that seem to only become more and more frequent.

One such addition is a “man trap.” Parents who pick their children up from school may be familiar with now needing to be buzzed in and often having to show their driver’s license at reception as proof of identification. These are in place to decrease the likelihood of a shooter entering the school.

But in the case a shooter does enter a school, there also must be infrastructure in place that slows them down — because the name of the game in a school safety plan, Ryder said, is speed.

“70 % of school shootings are over in three to five minutes, and 40 % of the 70 percent are over in two minutes,” Ryder said. “Response time in Nassau County to any emergency call is one to three minutes.”

“The quicker (police) get in there, the slower we slow the shooter down, the more we save lives,” he said.

Most schools now also have a “man trap,” Ryder said. This means that when someone is buzzed in, they go through a first set of doors but can’t yet get through a second set of doors. A potential shooter would be trapped between two sets of bulletproof doors.

As part of the school safety plan, police must also visit a school every day. Between 177 cops out there visiting, every single school building in Nassau County is visited every three days, Ryder said. Cops need to be familiar with the school’s layout in order to respond effectively to an emergency situation. By knowing the schools, officers don’t need to waste time finding a cafeteria or library when every second counts.

Police preparedness is only part of the school safety plan, Blakeman said — the rest is up to individuals. He urged people to dial 911 as soon as they see something or someone suspicious in or around a school.

“Don’t hesitate,” Blakeman said. “That hesitation could cost lives.”

But an increasingly important part of school safety is educating children on what it truly means to make a threat.

“‘I’m coming back to this school, and I’m gonna shoot it up’ — a kid could say that out of frustration,” Blakeman said. “He could say it out of anger. He could say it thinking he’s kidding around.

“We take it serious. And it’s a crime. And you have to talk to your children about using that kind of language.”

“It’s not a joke,” he added. “If a cop or a civilian dies responding to that 911 call, that child is gonna be held responsible for the death of that officer or that civilian.”

If a student makes a threat against a peer, or a class, the school safety plan mandates they be transported to NUMC for a mandatory medical and psychiatric evaluation. Regardless of what they intended, the child will be prosecuted for “making a terroristic threat,” which comes with one to three years of jail time. That still, however, is not as severe as the penalty that child “should” get, Ryder said, which is likely the reason kids “keep doing what they’re doing.”

“Unfortunately, the penalties with respect to the children are not as stiff as they used to be,” Blakeman said. “They’ve chaged the laws with respect to that.”

“Don’t do it,” he added, directed to kids. “It’s a crime, and we will go after you, and we will prosecute you.”

Parents are also urged to talk to their kids not only about the dangers of making threats, but also the need to report any threats they see or hear, especially on social media. The Nassau County Police Department has been trying to teach children to “report, don’t repost.” Doing so will help school safety plans be as efficient as possible, Ryder said.

The Future Of School Safety Plans

Nassau County’s school safety plan uses intelligence as a tool to combat any potential school violence, Blakeman said. And there have been major steps forward in terms of that intelligence.

The FBI and other federal organizations that the county works with are developing new technologies in order to track who makes school threats.

“I believe we’re going to have a breakthrough at some point,” Blakeman said. “We’re gonna be able to track and apprehend those who do this. And they will be punished.”

Intelligence operations are what revealed, for instance, that the ongoing threats to Kellenberg Memorial High School are all coming from one person. Officials plan on announcing the results of that investigation by the end of this week.

This season Broadway is hoping to use star power to boost ticket sales. So popular movie and television performers are headlining new theatrical productions as well as revivals. Producers hope that fans will flock to the theaters attracted by proximity to their screen favorites.  

One of the first shows this fall using this approach is “The Roommate” starring Mia Farrow and Patti Lupone. Employing a familiar trope, playwright Jen Silverman creates a female odd couple, a pair of 60- something women who never would have opted to be friends, let alone live together.

When Robyn from the Bronx flees New York City, she answers Sharon’s ad and moves in with her in Iowa City. Those familiar with Lupone and Farrow won’t be surprised at the obvious casting based upon their public personas. Farrow plays the naive Sharon who lives a secluded life. When asked what she is retired from, she answers “marriage.” She has a reading group but not much else except an adult son, a fashion designer living in Park Slope. Although his sexuality is clear to Robyn ( and us ), Sharon claims that he has a lesbian fiancee.

Robyn is closemouthed and resists answering personal questions, but eventually through Sharon’s persistence, some of her life is revealed. She is running away from her larcenous life in the city, hoping to make a change.  

Silverman’s characters are stereotypical, and the casting is obvious. Lupone is the brash, tough, no-nonsense Robyn. Lupone has a terrific delivery and can convey a thought  with a word or a glance. She is marvelous, as always, and could bring life to a phone directory (if one still existed), but, unfortunately, Silverman’s script gives her little to do.

Sharon’s part is more meaty, and, luckily, the highlight of the show is  provided by Farrow’s skilled performance. Sharon, a ‘country mouse, eagerly changes, modeling herself after Robyn. She begins smoking her roommate’s medicinal herbs” and copying her scams. Farrow ‘s character becomes more adventurous,yet Robyn shows little change. 

Jack O’Brien’s deft direction allows the actresses’ natural chemistry to flow. All the action occurs in Sharon’s big old house in Iowa City. She needs a roommate to share expenses.  (Set design by Bob Crowley) 

Silverman uses both characters’ phone calls to extend the play beyond the two characters. Sharon’s frequent calls to her son and Robyn’s brief messages to her daughter provide some background. 

There are no real surprises, and most of the story is predictable. Yet there’s some humor, much of which is dated and stems from Sharon’s isolation. She is filled with stereotypes which she unabashedly shares. She asks about the safety of the Bronx and shows unwillingness to accept her son’s being gay (He has a fiancee; the ‘fiancee” is a lesbian.) When she learns of Robyn’s phone scams, she asks  “Are you the Nigerians” referring to a popular phone scam used years ago. When Sharon uses some of Robyn’s ‘medicinal herbs’ and becomes ‘relaxed’, we aren’t surprised as Sharon embraces Robyn’s way with great enthusiasm.

I just wish the talented Lupone, who can imbue a single word with humor, sarcasm and meaning, had a part with more depth. However, my guess is that Lupone fans will be satisfied with what they get while Farrow fans may be pleasantly surprised. I wonder how the play would have worked had the roles been reversed with Lupone being the sheltered one and Farrow the feisty one.

A week before the show, I arrived at the theater at 12:45 for a 1 pm matinee to be told the show was canceled. Canceled? (Whatever happened to the show must go on? I thought as I immediately turned around and headed back to the LIRR.) Farrow had Covid and the producers realized how disappointed fans would be. So rather than have an understudy go on, the show was canceled. After all, star power sells tickets and fans want the one they paid to see. 

Dutifully, I made my way back to the BoothTheatre the following week once Farrow had gotten better. Fortunately and pleasantly, it  was worth the return trip. 

 

Courts grant former Great Neck Park District candidate ballot review in alleged election tampering lawsuit

A Nassau Supreme Court judge granted a former Great Neck Park District candidate the ability to review absentee ballots the park district refused to hand over in the conclusion of a lawsuit alleging election tampering by the park district.

“In today’s world, right now, election integrity is front and center,” Gordon Charlop, the former candidate who filed the lawsuit, said. “People want to know that the will of the people will be respected.”

The lawsuit alleged that the district has conducted “improper, unfair, biased and illegal” election procedures.

Judge Eileen Daly-Sapraicone in Nassau Supreme Court decided in Charlop’s request to have access to the ballots.

The lawsuit requested that the election be tossed out entirely, as well as the ability to review the ballots.

The courts determined that an election can only be invalidated by the attorney general, with both parties agreeing to remove that component of the lawsuit in March, according to court documents.

But on Monday, the judge delivered her decision on the case granting Charlop’s request that the park district allow him to review all ballot applications, including the voter’s name, signature and information regarding the delivery of the ballot, all in-person ballots, all absentee ballots, including the name and signature on the absentee ballots, and voting machine tapes.

While Charlop is able to review these documents, he must do so in the presence of a Great Neck Park District employee and can not remove them from their office.

“While the Park District regrets the diversion of resources, including taxpayer funds, to defend this litigation, we are gratified that the Court protected the privacy and anonymity of our residents and refused Charlop’s attempt to invalidate the election,” the Great Neck Park District Board of Commissioners wrote in a statement.

Charlop said he is pleased with the results.

Charlop, who lost to Park Commissioner Tina Stellato in the 2023 election, filed the lawsuit in State Supreme Court in Nassau County on Dec. 29, 17 days after the election.

According to data from the park district, Stellato won re-election in the race with 1,580 votes and Charlop received 710.

Charlop garnered about 47% of all in-person votes but fell behind in absentee votes. He received 69 absentee votes, while Stellato received 861.

Charlop questioned the high number of absentee ballots.

The lawsuit alleges the park district election conducted inaccurate balloting, which led to Charlop losing the race.

It alleges the park district’s handling of absentee balloting did not abide by the law in permitting individuals to vote absentee when they may not have met the requirements to do so, as well as harvesting these ballots to be filled out by someone other than the voter.

Charlop also questioned in the lawsuit the reporting of votes from a voting machine that had broken down amid polling, speculating about 20 votes may have been lost, as well as district voting maps that omitted about 500 eligible voters.

Charlop said these components may have cost him the election.

In the bigger picture, Charlop said the lawsuit is to fight for election integrity. He said that due to the perception of the park district pre-determining election results, individuals no longer sought to run.

Many people before him sought to review the ballot information, Charlop said, but all were denied as he was – until he filed the lawsuit and the judge rendered her decision in favor of him.

While Charlop said he has not yet reviewed the ballots, he said he intends to turn over any improper election conduct he may find to the attorney general, who can invalidate an election.

The park district asserted its elections are fair.

“Park District elections are conducted fairly, openly, and lawfully by our dedicated staff, even as they endure less than exemplary conduct by some participants,” the Park District Board of Commissioners wrote in a statement. “Our residents know that they can vote by machine (as 1,360 did in 2023), or by absentee ballot (as 930 did in 2023) without intimidation, and that the Park District will defend those interests when threatened.”

Planning committee seeks public input for grant projects

Proposed public and private grant projects were presented to the Mineola community, as the deadline to submit them to the state approaches.

The Local Planning Committee of the New York Forward grant program held its second public workshop meeting on Monday night. Committee members presented several proposed projects that the state’s $4.5 million grant money will fund.

Gov. Kathy Hochul launched the grant program in 2022 to support downtown revitalization for New York’s smaller communities.

Through the NYF program, smaller downtowns, like Mineola, will receive the planning and implementation support needed to attract more businesses, residents and visitors while also providing a higher quality of life for all residents.​

The state recommended that Mineola submit project proposals totaling at least $6 million. This allows flexibility when the state determines which project is most cost-effective and in case a project does not go through.

The projects presented at the second workshop included Second Street and Main Street redesign, sponsored by the village; train station connectivity improvements, sponsored by the village; wayfinding/signage and streetscape enhancements, sponsored by the village; public mural on the pavilion parking garage wall, sponsored by the village; Village of Mineola marketing and branding study, sponsored by the village; Century Lounge in The Bridge, sponsored by Ross Levine; 94 Main St. Renovations, sponsored by Isabel Garcia; Second-Main Street: Mixed-use development, sponsored by ESHCO Real Estate and Mgmt. Inc.; The St. James facade renovation, sponsored by Peter Viscardi and Will Elvert; and 199 Jericho: Mixed-use development, sponsored by Mineola 199 LLC.

For each private project, the sponsor must match the project by at least 25%.

Also presented at the meeting was a Small Project Fund — sponsored by the village — to support a range of downtown projects. The village has received nine letters of interest from businesses requesting enhancements and assistance with this pool of $375,000.

Community members had the opportunity to read about each project, as well as write their opinions on a post-it note.

Regarding the Second Street and Main Street redesigns, someone wrote “losing parking spaces. What are the implications for businesses loading and unloading?”

“Commercial space should be prioritized,” one community member wrote in reference to the Second-Main Street: mixed-use development project. “So many apartment buildings already.”

For the Small Project Fund, one person wrote, “maintain overall aesthetic of Mineola Diner!” Someone else wrote, “most of these are in historic building. Interested in preserving the look and the history.”

These projects and the Small Project Fund total about $5.8 million. After the price for the Second and Main Street mixed-use development is determined, this number is expected to surpass the minimum project submission requirement of $6 million. This number is also expected to be tweaked after upcoming LPC meetings.

“Mineola will be a thriving downtown destination for residents, workers, and guests, with vibrant shops, restaurants, and unique spaces to gather for entertainment and community events,” the NYF downtown vision statement, which was created with LPC’s guidance, states. “As the official Seat of Nassau County and a central Long Island hub for employment and transit, downtown Mineola is poised to become the ‘go-to’ place that serves all local needs while attracting visitors into its safe, pleasant, walkable, and welcoming community.”

“The very first step that we’re in, the planning process, is to refine that vision statement, refine the goals, make sure they are really saying what the village wants them to say and that they’re reflected what the consensus is,” Susan Favate, principal at BFJ Planning and part of the NYF consultant team, said.

Favate said Mineola’s population has increased by 57 percent in the last 12 years, with most of the increase in the village’s downtown area. She said this can lead to more potential for activity.

“We have heard consistently just a really strong desire for more restaurants, more variety of shops, more things at night and on the weekend,” Favate said. “So these projects are really meant to guide the development of those projects in the downtown profile, as well as the vision statement and goals and strategies.”

The next step in the process will be the fifth LPC Meeting, which will be held on Oct. 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mineola Community Center. The LPC will continue to receive input from the community over the next couple of months. Then, in mid-December, the LPC will send the project proposals to the state.

Center to ‘Exceed’ educational expectations in Albertson

Olga Binyaminov opened her business, Exceed Learning Center, in Albertson in September – four years after COVID shut down her Queens location.

Binyaminov said she wanted to create a place where learning was not confined to the classroom, where students could discover their unique potential and where education meant more than just grades.

She did just that 18 years ago with the creation of her education business in Queens.

The location at 1360 Willis Ave. aims to foster creativity and instill a lifelong love for learning in students.

“When I started this academy in 2006, my vision was clear: to create a place where learning was not confined to the classroom, where students could discover their unique potential, and where education meant more than just grades,” Binyaminov said on ExceedLearningCenterNY.com.

“Anything from chess, art, homework help and we have abacus mental math which is very unique to my center,” Binyaminov said. “I am a certified abacus mental math teacher and this is something that I do for the little ones.”

ExceedLearningCenterNY.com explains that abacus math enhances mental arithmetic skills, enabling children to calculate complex equations with ease. Engaging with the abacus stimulates brain development, fostering improved concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills, according to the website. This course is available for students aged 4 through 13.

Binyaminov said her center also offers programs for teenagers, such as a book club and financial education, as well as classes on note-taking techniques, studying and being heard. Some other programs include SAT preparation classes and tutoring, which is open to all ages.

“I’m working with someone right now to bring an etiquette course to the teenagers as well as sex education for the teenagers,” Binyaminov said.

There are also programs for adults like brain and memory training, public speaking, how not to procrastinate, positive thinking and journaling. She said these programs are geared to helping and enhancing one’s life

Binyaminov said all of her programs have been virtual since 2020 until her students asked if they could start seeing her in person. Binyaminov, who lives in the area, said she found this storefront in Albertson and thought her business would greatly serve the community.

“I know how important education is for this particular community,” Binyaminov said.

Binyaminov said business has been slow since she opened on Sept. 10 and she would like to see her center grow for all ages, particularly teenagers.

“I think the school education doesn’t provide the basics of life that these students need so I really do want to bring awareness and grow this community for the new teenagers that are becoming adults,” Binyaminov said.

The following program is their Chess Class on Tuesday for beginners and professionals at either 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Also, the center’s Art Therapy class for teens and adults takes place every Wednesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Manhasset schools now observing Diwali

The Manhasset School District will now be observing the holiday of Diwali and granting students the day off after months of community advocacy.

“We deeply value the rich diversity of our community and the many cultural and religious traditions that make it so vibrant,” Superintendent Gaurav Passi said.

The Manhasset Board of Education voted Thursday night to amend its school calendar to schedule a superintendent’s conference day for Diwali, giving students a day off from school and enabling them to observe the holiday.

The holiday will be observed for this school year. This year, Diwali is celebrated on Friday, Nov. 1

Members of the local Indian community, who celebrate Diwali, advocated for the school to observe the holiday during board of education meetings last school year. They presented petitions from students and the community.

Passi said calendar restraints prohibit the district from observing every holiday, which is why Diwali was not previously included on the calendar.

“While we may not be able to honor every tradition with a day off, we are continually seeking meaningful ways to acknowledge and celebrate the diverse cultures represented in our community,” Passi said. “From school-based events and cultural programs, we want to ensure our students’ traditions are recognized and valued throughout the school year.”

The board also discussed a consulting agreement with the Center for Forensic and Clinical Psychology to train staff on behavioral threat assessment and management. The district would also be able to consult with the center’s doctor when responding to threats and completing threat assessments.

The board opted to table a decision on the contract until it is reviewed by the district’s safety committee.

Passi said the behavioral threat assessment includes three steps: identifying individuals who pose a potential threat, gathering information to assess the threat and intervention. He called it a proactive safety approach.

“This training will add an important layer to our proactive safety efforts by equipping our staff to assess the seriousness of a student’s behavior, respond appropriately to prevent violence and address the underlying issues that may lead to threats,” Passi said.

The training informs staff on how to assess statements or concerning behaviors and how to seek out the appropriate resources to address them.

“This process will aid us in diffusing situations before they escalate, ensuring a safer environment for our students and staff,” Passi said.

Passi said there has been an uptick in threats throughout the county but that police have determined none to be credible. He said the Manhasset School District has not had any threats.

The board also discussed its district goals and priorities for the school year.

Priorities included inspiring growth for students, connecting through strong relationships, supporting growth for educators and upgrading security and facilities. While Passi said strides have already been made in these areas, the district is looking to expand it even further.

Passi said the district is seeking to host community town halls where stakeholders can provide input on school initiatives as a way to achieve connections through strong relationships.

One initiative the district is assessing to promote school safety is potentially hiring a safety company for security management and training consultations.

LiPetri garners law enforcement endorsements in congressional bid against Suozzi, also endorsed by local police

Mike LiPetri, the Republican candidate for New York’s 3rd District, has garnered a slew of endorsements from law enforcement and first responders in his congressional bid, ranging from local Nassau County organizations to those based in New York City.

LiPetri, a former state Assembly member, is challenging Democratic incumbent Tom Suozzi, who was re-elected to his former seat in the February special election to replace ousted George Santos and an unsuccessful 2022 bid for governor.

The Nassau County Detectives’ Association, the Nassau County Superior Officers Association, the New York City Fire Marshals Association, and the Association of Former Detectives of Nassau County have endorsed LiPetri.

LiPetri was also added to the 2024 Young Guns list, compiled by the National Republican Campaign Committee to signal prioritized races.

“The voters in NY-03 are ready for a fresh start,” LiPetri said in a press release. “We’re offering next generation common sense solutions, while our opponent represents the problems of the past. It’s simple – a vote for Kamala Harris and Tom Suozzi is a vote for open borders, record inflation, and the pro-crime agenda that favors criminals over law-abiding Americans. Vote Republican and we will flip this seat, grow the House GOP Majority, and do what’s right for America!”

In tandem with his endorsements, LiPetri also held a press conference Wednesday with the Nassau County Superior Officers Association, Nassau County Detectives’ Association and Association of Former Detectives of Nassau County to announce his legislative plans to increase punishments for criminals charged with killing cops.

The proposed legislation called the “How Many More Act” would charge individuals convicted of killing a police officer with federal murder charges. This would make them eligible for the death penalty in their sentencing.

Days before LiPetri rallied with local law enforcement, Suozzi was endorsed by the Nassau County and Glen Cove Police Benevolent Associations. Just months before the special election, the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association opted to endorse his Republican challenger, Nassau County District 10 Legislator Mazi Pilip (R–Great Neck).

Nassau County PBA President Tommy Shevlin said the decision was not easy but that Suozzi was selected due to his historic support of law enforcement and his commitment to public safety since being elected. He said they’ve been considering the endorsement since he was elected to office.

Great Neck native author, former reporter writes what she knows in second novel “Dangerous Play”

Elise Hart Kipness started her career as a reporter by returning to Long Island, the place she called home throughout her childhood.

Now, she returns home again to Great Neck through her book Dangerous Play, which marries aspects of her career and her childhood.

“I really enjoy going back to places and things that are familiar to me,” author Hart Kipness said.

“Dangerous Play” is the second book in the series following sports reporter Kate Green as she covers the Olympics after returning from a public and embarrassing suspension.

But when she arrives at Yankee Stadium to cover the women’s soccer match, she finds a dead body in an ice bath in the locker room, and it’s someone she recognizes – a former teammate and good friend whose friendship ended poorly.

So Green commits herself to solving the murder to right the wrongs of her former friendship, despite the secrets it may expose about herself and others.

Hart Kipness moved to Great Neck when she was in the third grade, moving on up from her start at Elizabeth M. Baker Elementary School to her graduation from Great Neck North High School.

The murder victim in her book is from Great Neck, specifically from Kings Point, with moments of the book illustrating the peninsula in which Hart Kipness grew up.

She is also a former broadcast news journalist, starting her career on Long Island where she reported for WLNY-TV based in Riverhead and later with News 12 and then WNBC in the city.

“You’re told you have to go across the country to find your job and I ended up back on Long Island,” Hart Kipness said.

Over her career, Hart Kipness covered a variety of stories, from murder trials like the Long Island Rail Road Massacre trial to natural disasters like the Pine Barren fires in 1995.

After years of covering crime, Hart Kipness said it took a toll on her.

“Every day in your life, something really tragic happens and that’s not reality and life, necessarily, but it’s your reality,” Hart Kipness said. “But at the same time, it’s not your tragedy, so it almost felt wrong to feel upset about it because it’s someone else’s trauma, and it just became very heavy.”

But now Hart Kipness channels the experiences and trauma from her reporting days into her writing. She said her writing helps her process those days of crime reporting.

Later in her career, Hart Kipness pivoted to sports reporting.

But sports reporting presented its own challenges as she was one of the few women in the field. While she followed in the footsteps of the women who came before her to initially break those barriers, there were still hurdles to overcome.

Hart Kipness said there were times she didn’t speak up for herself when, in retrospect, she felt like she should have.

“At the time, I felt like I was just lucky to be in the game,” Hart Kipness said.

Hart Kipness’ writing is inspired by her career, encompassing her experiences both as a crime reporter and covering sports. The content of her books marries both sides of her journalism career.

The main character of “Dangerous Play” is modeled after Hart Kipness’ and her own experiences as a reporter, but Hart Kipness said she is much tougher than she in order to right the moments she didn’t stand up for herself.

She described writing the main character as cathartic.

Hart Kipness transitioned out of her journalism career when her son was four in order to spend more time at home. After about five years, she said she missed writing the most.

But Hart Kipness was no longer seeking to write the inverted pyramid of journalism and began taking classes to become a novelist.

From the details of the environment to the MAC powder makeup of every on-air reporter, Hart Kipness brings a personal touch to her writing to share the unseen aspects of a reporter.

“One of my goals with writing this book was to take readers behind the scenes of moments in sports reporting and reporting that they wouldn’t otherwise see,” Hart Kipness said. “So what is it like to stand on the field of Yankee Stadium? What is it like to go into the tunnels or the locker rooms? How do players celebrate or act within the locker rooms? I really wanted to share that.”

Translated into “Dangerous Play” are also moments directly from Hart Kipness’ career, including some of the competitive sabotage that occurred within the newsroom.

Hart Kipness once reported the collapse of a supermarket roof due to snow piling. When she went live on the scene, the anchor asked her how much the snow weighed. Without any way to answer an almost impossible question, Hart Kipness said she fumbled on her answer and felt foolish.

In “Dangerous Play,” the anchor asks Green questions that are impossible to answer in an attempt to make her look like a fool. Instead of fumbling with an answer like Hart Kipness formerly did, she instead responded by asking herself a different question that was much more appropriate for her to answer.

Hart Kipness is already beginning her third book in the series “Close Call,” which she teased is about the U.S. Open and will also include a character from Long Island.

“Close Call” is scheduled to be released in Fall 2025.

From Ecuador to New York: St. Francis nurse makes his way ‘from the bottom’ to provide care

Luis Bravo immigrated to the United States, speaking only Spanish.

Over the next 17 years, he learned English and became a nurse at Roslyn’s St. Francis Hospital, where his native tongue is now critical in caring for Spanish-speaking patients.

“I really wanted to be in the medical field, so I started from the bottom, and then I became a nurse, and I’m doing what I want to do, which is helping people and helping my community and Spanish-speaking people,” Bravo said. “It’s great. You feel like you’re doing what you’re meant to do.”

Bravo, 38, immigrated to the United States from Ecuador in 2007 when he was 20. In Ecuador, Bravo lived with his stay-at-home mother, his father, and eight siblings. His father worked at a cardboard company.

He said that since he turned 18, his plan was to make the move.

“It was like a plan but it was like never knowing when it was going to happen,” Bravo said. “It happened quickly. Next thing I was here.”

Bravo had family in the United States when he immigrated, settling in Queens where he still resides.

He first started working as an operations supervisor at JFK Airport, but it was not what he had his eyes set on.

He was always interested in medicine, competing on his high school chemistry team.

But upon arriving in the states, Bravo said he found the language barrier to be a challenge and focused his studies on English.

“At the beginning I was just lost,” Bravo said.

After focusing on his English, Bravo later enrolled in Plaza College’s medical assistant program and earned his associate’s degree. Bravo then enrolled again at Plaza College four years later and earned his nursing degree.

Through his clinicals, Bravo was introduced to the doctors at St. Francis Hospital. He said he liked the culture present at the hospital.

Bravo has worked in St. Francis’ stroke unit for the past six months.

While he said his transition to becoming a nurse was rough at times, it was the support of his fellow medical staff that helped him persevere through it. He said every year gets easier and easier.

Speaking only Spanish was a challenge for Bravo when he arrived in the United States, but now his native language has been an asset in providing quality care to some of his patients.

Bravo once had a patient from Columbia who did not speak any English. When he arrived on the floor, Bravo said the older gentleman was in distress because he could not communicate.

When Bravo stepped in, he said the man immediately untensed over having someone he could speak with and express his needs.

“He even asked me for my phone number because he wanted to invite me to his house,” Bravo said. “…It was a great experience.”

Bravo encouraged others like him to pursue their dreams, whether in the medical field or elsewhere.

“If you like helping people and you really think that you can make a difference in certain fields, you should go for it,” Bravo said. “You should try.”

First Central Savings Bank distributes $50,000 in grants to local nonprofits

First Central Savings Bank, headquartered in Glen Cove, with multiple branches across Queens and Nassau County, has announced a contribution to the local community with $50,000 in grants awarded to 20 nonprofit organizations.

Each nonprofit will receive $2,500, which will support its vital work and enhance the well-being of neighborhoods across the region.

Partnering with the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, FCSB’s initiative reflects its commitment to fueling hope and progress throughout its community.

According to the bank, the grants serve as catalysts for development, uplifting those working tirelessly to bring about positive change and resilience.

“At First Central Savings Bank, we understand that each act of kindness, no matter its size, can start a wave of extraordinary impact,” said Michael Serao, executive vice president of FCSB. “United by a common goal and driven by the spirit of our communities, we achieve incredible feats. In these instances—when limits are surpassed and aspirations are fulfilled—we truly discover our shared strength and craft a more promising future.”

The grants are expected to empower these organizations as they address various social needs, including youth education, environmental stewardship, cultural heritage and support for vulnerable populations.

By providing this financial support, FCSB aims to bolster the work of these nonprofits, which act as “community heroes,” according to the bank, and strengthen the social fabric of the neighborhoods they serve.

Serao also emphasized the importance of unity and collective action as the holidays approach.
