Students from The Wheatley School’s Life Skills at the East Williston School District had a rich educational experience through a weekly visit to Nassau Community College.

Each Thursday, Life Skills students collaborate with peers from another school
district to participate in functional classes on the college campus. The program is designed to provide students with a real college-life experience, enhancing their learning beyond the classroom. With access to the college’s cafe, library and other campus activities, they are encouraged to develop self-determination skills under the guidance of their teachers.

The Life Skills program serves students ages 16 to 22 years old, helping them prepare
for post-secondary life. The younger students focus on building pre-vocational skills at The
Wheatley School while engaging in community involvement through a series of field trips.

The older students expand their vocational skills and community involvement by applying
the skills to real-world job opportunities at a variety of local businesses. Their experiences
on the college campus contribute significantly to the students’ robust work and community
experience and prepares them further for their life after The Wheatley School.

Over 100 community members attended the annual New Hyde Park Golf Outing.

The New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce hosted its Annual Charity Golf Outing on Sept. 18. Starting at 11 a.m. at Harbor Links Golf Club in Port Washington, participants ate brunch, followed by a game of 18 holes. This rolled into cocktail hour and dinner at 6 p.m., with community members having the chance to win various raffle prizes.

This year’s outing honored Mark Laytin, member of the golf committee for over 15 years; Richard DeMartino, past president of the chamber of commerce; and Ralph Ventura, past-president of the chamber of commerce. The three honorees, which the chamber refers to as the “three musketeers,” have been instrumental in the success of this annual event.

Christopher Vulpis, co-committee chair of the New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing, said the outing typically generates between $30,000 and $40,000. The proceeds will help charities such as the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber Charity Fund, Katie’s Run, Wounded Warrior Project, local school scholarships, Colette Coyne Melanoma Foundation, New Hyde Park Gladiator Fund, Ronald McDonald House, Casey Falconer Scholarship Fund, St. Baldricks Foundation, and more.

“We raised the most amount of money we ever raised with the golf outings,” Vulpis said. “And those funds were equally split between the charity arm of the New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce and the New Hyde Park Lions Club.”

Vulpis said the golf outing will return next year. The date and information on the honorees aren’t set yet.

“Thank you to all the sponsors, Harbor Links, Stretch Lab, and the many businesses who graciously donate raffles year after year, all the volunteers who donated endless hours to make this fundraiser a success, and all the golfers and guests who came out to support both organizations,” Dana DeSimpliciis, executive assistant of the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, said in a release.

The Mineola Kiwanis Club of County Seat hosted its biggest fundraiser of the year, honoring New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.

The fundraiser, held on Sept. 25 at Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington, was the group’s 12th annual golf outing. All of the proceeds collected benefitted the local community and groups such as the Ronald McDonald House, St. Aidans School, book bags and sneakers for kids and student scholarships.

Over 100 people attended the golf outing.

“The golf outing has always been very successful with so many people coming out to support our causes. This year was no exception,” Joel Harris, public relations of the Mineola Kiwanis Club of County Seat, said.

The event started at 10 a.m. with people registering to play golf and eating a buffet-style breakfast. Afterwards, attendees played on the 18-hole golf course, which Harris said was professional and challenging. Over 100 people were at the outing.

Later that day, DiNapoli, graduate of Mineola High School, was honored at the outing’s dinner.

New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli was honored at the outing.

“We want to thank all our sponsors for their generosity and all our local businesses for all the prizes they donated to make our raffles as successful as they were,” Harris said.

The next golf outing will be on Sept. 10 at Harbor Links.

“We continue to look forward to supporting all those in our community that we can be of assistance to,” Harris said.

While “Money Can’t Buy Me Love,” it can help underserved children in Manhasset and Great
Neck “Get By With A Little Help From Their Friends” through Adventures in Learning.

On Friday, Oct. 18 from 7-9 p.m., the public is invited to “Come Together” in the Congregational Church Parish Hall for a concert featuring Beatles cover band, Pre-Fab Four, the world’s premier live Beatles tribute act.

The church is located at 1845 Northern Blvd. in Manhasset (across from the Apple Store).

Visit www.uccmanhasset.org for more information.

Not only did the 60s give us the Beatles, it also gave us Adventures in Learning thanks to the imagination and financial backing of The Congregational Church of Manhasset and church member Maggie Grundman, the Adventures’ first director of 30 years.

What started as an after- school tutorial program for at-risk 2nd and 3rd graders, has now blossomed into a K-6 educational and enrichment program dedicated to improving the lives of underserved Long Island children in need of after-school care and instruction.

Housed in the Hagedorn Community Center at the Manhasset/Great Neck EOC and the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Great Neck, Adventures provides a warm and caring environment where children develop homework skills while benefiting from literary and math programs, STEM enrichment programs, and cultural activities.

Adventures provides an environment that nurtures the minds, bodies and souls of children from the formative years of early childhood through the impressionable years of pre-adolescence.

Fun, values-focused activities led by trained adult staff are offered for students each day after school at Adventures.

The activities focus on values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Funds raised at the Oct. 19 Beatles Tribute Concert will help perpetuate the vital work of
Adventures in Learning.

The Society for Science has announced Great Neck students Andy Zhuang and Eric Zhuang among the Top 300 Junior Innovators in the 2024 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (Thermo Fisher JIC)—the nation’s premier science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competition for middle school students.

The Top 300 Junior Innovators were selected from nearly 2,000 students from 48 states plus U.S. Territories who applied to compete in the Thermo Fisher JIC this past spring.

Junior Innovators receive a $125 award from the Department of Defense STEM and a prize package with gifts from program sponsors.

Andy and Eric qualified to enter the Thermo Fisher JIC by winning first place at the Long Island Science and Engineering SSP Broadcom Masters Fair (LISEF), held in March 2024, for their research project, “Gene Expression Analysis of the Impact of Febrile Seizures on Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.”

They conducted their research as eighth graders at South Middle School with guidance from science research mentor Tobias Hatten.

“The Top 300 projects are an extraordinary reflection of what matters most to these students and their dedication to improving lives through the use of STEM,” Karen Nelson, Chief Scientific Officer, Thermo Fisher Scientific, said. “Congratulations to the entire class of 2024 Junior Innovators—your example strengthens our ambition to make STEM education equitable for all youth.”

The Thermo Fisher JIC, a program of Society for Science, seeks to inspire young scientists, engineers and innovators to solve the grand challenges of the future.

Established in 1921, Society for Science is best known for its award-winning journalism through Science News and Science News Explores, its world-class science research competitions for students, including the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the Regeneron
International Science and Engineering Fair and the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, and its outreach and equity programming that seeks to ensure that
all students have an opportunity to pursue a career in STEM.

For another year, South High School has been honored by the New York State Public High
School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) as a recipient of the 2023–24 School of Distinction
Award.

South High is one of 20 high schools in Nassau County to receive this honor, which requires that 100% of a school’s varsity teams qualify for the Scholar-Athlete Team award during their respective season.

A total of 114 schools across New York State earned the School of Distinction Award for the 2023–24 school year. An additional 226 schools earned the School of Excellence Award, which requires that 75% of a school’s varsity teams qualify for the Scholar-Athlete Team award.

“The efforts made by student-athletes in the classroom are paramount to their success in the athletic arena, and beyond their high school days,” Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director, said. “We are proud of those who put in the work as ‘student’ and ‘athlete’, as well as the growth in both of School of Excellence and Distinction recognition.”

South High Athletic Director Don Herr accepted this award on behalf of the school
during a regional NYSPHSAA meeting.
