Chaminade bests Holy Trinity, 17-7

The Chaminade Flyers remained undefeated for the 2013 season, raising their record to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in CHSFL play with a 17-7 win over Holy Trinity Sunday. 

Led by senior quarterback Sean Cerrone and junior running back Robert Speranza Jr., Chaminade raced out to a 14-0 halftime lead and never looked back. 

Cerrone scored the team’s first two touchdowns on runs of two and 20 yards before the Trojans got on the board courtesy Phillip Crawford’s 11-yard scoring tun in the third to pull trinity within a touchdown. Chaminade place kicker John Curylo’s 21-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter sealed the win for the Flyers.

Cerrone completed seven passes for 101 yards, three to wide receiver Matthew Isnardi. Speranza led the ground attack with 64 yards on nine carries, followed by Cerrone with 59 yards on six attempts and two touchdowns. John Tigh and Joseph Bellantuono each had six carries for 31 and 22 yards, respectively. 

Things will get no easier for the Flyers, who will hit the road to take on Stepinac (4-1, 3-1 CHSFL) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. before hosting Holy Cross (4-0, 3-0 CHSFL) on Oct.. 19, and traveling to battle archrivals St. Anthony’s (4-1, 4-0 CHSFL) on Oct. 25. 

Port Washington 47, Great Neck North 12. Mike Gennusa rushed for 178 on 20 carries with three touchdowns to lead undefeated Port Washington over their neighbors to the west this past Saturday afternoon. Quarterback James Burns passed for 153 yards and a touchdown, Michael Torres had an interception return for a touchdown for Great Neck North (2-2 Nassau Conference V), which will travel south to take on Great Neck South Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Port Washington (4-0 Nassau Conference V) will host Jericho Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Roslyn 22, Friends Academy 18. The Roslyn Bulldogs kept their perfect record intact Saturday despite falling behind 12-0 after one quarter of play. QB Adam Combs threw for 81 yards and two touchdowns, a second quarter strike to Alex Epprecht and third quarter connection to Isaiah Hunter. Thomas Davis, who ran for 84 yards on 13 carries, closed out the scoring with a 30-yard scoring scamper. Epprecht also had two interceptions and recovered on onside kick to set up the go-ahead score. Roslyn (4-0 Nassau Conference V) will host St. Dominic Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Jericho 50, Great Neck South 12. A brief 6-0 lead evaporated quickly as Great Neck South (0-4 Nassau Conference V) was run over by a Jericho team that racked up more than 250 yards on the ground. Rebels QB Ben Lee reached the end zone on a two-yard run to close out the game’s scoring. GNS (0-4 Nassau Conference V) will try again for their first win when they host Great Neck North this weekend. 

Valley Stream South 29, New Hyde Park 8. The Gladiators of New Hyde Park remained winless following a 21-point defeat at the hand of the Falcons from Valley Stream South Saturday. Matthew Dlugniski scored the team’s lone touchdown on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter and also tossed the two-point conversion to senior wide receiver Brennan Scanlon. NHP (0-4 Nassau Conference III) will host Sewanhaka (1-3) Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Lynbrook 35, Manhasset 3. Despite taking an early 3-0 lead on kicker Robert Hamerman’s 22-yard field goal, the Manhasset Indians fell to 1-3 in Nassau Conference III as the Lynbrook Golden Tornadoes’ offense rolled with 35 unanswered points. Manhasset (1-3 Nassau Conference III) will play at Division (1-3) Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Valley Stream North 30, Carle Place / Wheatley 16. The CP/W Frogs went up 8-6 early in the third quarter but went on to surrender 24 unanswered points before a late scoring run closed the gap to the 14-point margin of victory for the Spartans from VSN. The Frogs (0-4 Nassau Conference IV) will visit the East Rockaway Rocks Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Westbury 40, Herricks 6. The Westbury Green Dragons dominated the Herricks Highlanders in their Nassau Conference II match-up this weekend, as QB Raeco Jackson threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns and running back Shalike Merchant rushed for an astounding 264 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Herricks, now 1-3 in league play, will take on South Side Saturday at 2 p.m. Westbury (2-2) will host Mepham at 7 p.m. Friday.

Mineola 20, North Shore 14. Chris Lockwood’s field goal block on the final play of regulation and Vinny Bieniek’s four-yard run in overtime sealed the win for the Mustangs. Kyle Dunleavey had a 13-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Bienek’s 19-yard touchdown jaunt in the third tied the game up at 14 apiece. The pair ran for 69 and 52 yards, respectively, each on 10 carries. Mineola (2-2 Nassau Conference IV) will hit the road to take on unbeaten Roosevelt Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
