A new creative writing workshop series at the Sands Point Preserve, in collaboration with The Story Round, kicks off on Aug. 8.

Instructors and educators Jennifer Albertson and Eva Shtein are the founders and facilitators of The Story Round, a Port Washington-based provider of writing workshops.

Together, they will guide participants at the Preserve through a variety of workshops designed to build skills, inspire creativity, and ignite a passion for writing.

“Each workshop is designed to teach a specific skill, but the series is designed with an eye on developing many skills that will encourage continued writing after the series is complete,” Shtein says. “Our hope is to turn an interest in writing into a practice,” Albertson adds.

All workshops include both indoor and outdoor segments to truly take advantage of all that the Preserve has to offer, from the castles to the water, and even the playground.

“The Preserve is a stunning part of our community – you can’t help but be inspired,” Albertson said.

The Story Round will provide all writing materials, and participants should just come with their imagination.

The workshops run on a series of Thursday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., with the final evening running till 7:30 p.m. The workshops include:

Imagery and Mood on Aug. 8. Here, participants will explore the beauty of the Sands Point Preserve through the art of descriptive and reflective writing. Through guided observations of the natural world, writers will engage all of their senses to create original works inspired by the grounds and by personal experiences.

Setting and Movement on Aug. 22. Creating a compelling setting, especially one through which a character moves, requires the ability to generate language that brings the scene to life. In this workshop, centered around the playground and Learning Center at Sands Point Preserve, writers will use active language in their descriptions to convey movement and atmosphere.

World Building on Sept. 5. Inspired by the architecture of Sands Point Preserve and the historic Castle Gould, this immersive workshop will guide writers in crafting worlds that challenge the norm and redefine reality. With expert guidance from The Story Round, writers will embark on a journey to create a world unlike any other.

Character and Conflict on Sept. 19. Bring the imagined world of Castle Gould to life by crafting characters and developing conflicts. With the help of The Story Round, writers will breathe new life into the historic castle by exploring the journey of an original character.

The Art of Reading to an Audience on Sept. 26. A key component of writing is the ability to share your work effectively. With the help of The Story Round, writers will gain an understanding of the art of reading their work to others. This workshop will cover topics such as pace, tone variation, enunciation, gesturing and eye contact. For the second part of this session, writers will invite friends and family to the Hempstead House Garden for a celebratory reading of their works.

Admission, which includes parking and all fees, is $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers. For more information, please visit http://sandspointpreserveconservancy.org/events/creative-writing-workshops/
