Port Summer Show celebrates 50th anniversary

This summer Port Washington has a celebration half a century in the making. We’re marking 50 years of the Port Summer Show, a non-profit community tradition of local teens banding together to put on a Broadway-style musical for everyone to enjoy.

For our golden anniversary, the Port Summer Show is going all-out with a roof-raising production of Disney’s “Mary Poppins.” This sentimental favorite will bring the whole community together. The entire cast is composed of local teens.

Parent volunteers manage the production, bringing in theater professionals to direct, choreograph, and coach the kids through a full Broadway experience. Neighborhood businesses support the effort. The whole community turns out for the rising curtain.

This is a story of neighbors working together to make something special, and doing it every summer for 50 years. This is a story of kids volunteering for hundreds of hours every July to offer some joy to everyone come August.

This is a story of the lights, costumes, dancing, and music, all brought to harvest with a thousand gallons of sweat. This is the Port Summer Show.

Rehearsals at Schreiber High School run 3-4 evenings a week from the end of June. The show opens on the first Thursday in August and plays through the weekend.

Come see our labor of love before the curtain goes up. You can speak to the kids, the parents, and alumni from the show’s 5-decade history. You can see the rehearsals, the preparations, all the behind-the-scenes drama.

You can tell the story of how a group of bored teens with nothing to do one summer started something their own grandkids now continue. You can share the legacy of joy passed down through generations.
