The Great Neck Water Pollution Control District (GNWPCD) is proud to announce that it is once again hosting its biannual “Shed the Meds” event on Sunday, October 2 from 10:30 am to 1:30 p.m. at its headquarters at 236 East Shore Road, Great Neck, NY 11023 via the Vista Hill Road entrance.

The GNWPCD encourages the community to take advantage of its contactless drive-thru event, which provides residents with an opportunity to safely dispose of unused and expired medications as well as sharps. Before arriving at the event, residents should be sure to separate their medications and sharps to ensure their safe disposal.

“We are excited and encouraged that participation in Shed the Meds continues to grow every year,” said GNWPCD Chairwoman Patty Katz. “When residents safely dispose of their unused medications and pharmaceutical waste at this event, we are able to keep our environment free of these potentially harmful materials. As community involvement in Shed the Meds increases, so too do the incredible benefits it brings to our Peninsula’s natural environment.”

“Every six months, we grow more and more proud of our community for its incredible participation in Shed the Meds,” said GNWPCD Commissioner Steve Reiter. “Their involvement in this event goes a long way toward helping us achieve our goal of protecting our natural environment, and we are greatly looking forward to seeing our neighbors come by our facility in support of such an important program.”

This year, the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District has partnered with Reach Out America, the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition, the Nassau County Police Department and the Great Neck North High School Key Club. Due to the community’s continued participation and enthusiasm surrounding this event, the District has been able to collect almost 4,000 pounds of pharmaceutical waste and sharps over the last seven years.

“Our District’s Shed the Meds event provides a resource to our residents which can be difficult to find, as it is one of the only places where they can safely dispose of medical sharps on Long Island,” said GNWPCD Commissioner Jerry Landsberg. “Preserving our environment is our foremost priority, and we are proud to provide this event to our neighbors as a means of helping us along in that mission.”
