To commemorate 10 years in business and five in Williston Park, MadMen Barbershop has been offering $10 off its $25 haircuts.
“It’s to say thank you for all the years so far and to give back to the community,” co-owner Ed Dennehy said. “A lot of places are raising their prices right now due to inflation, but that’s not always the case.”
The Baldwin native opened up MadMen in Wantagh with no haircutting experience, instead providing a mixture of services that involved barbering and his personal background of tailoring.
“We had barbers cutting hair and also were meeting with clients, taking their measurements and making custom suits,” Dennehy said. “Over the years the barbershop has been much more dominant. It sees more people and we’ve had to dedicate more of that space to the barbershop.”
Dennehy said when looking for his second location, he wanted to emulate his original Wantagh location as closely as possible. He said that when he first saw his current spot on Hillside Avenue, it was a corner shop on a busy two-lane road that “spoke to us the most.”
After originally opening up on Hillside with 15 chairs, the cost of the property’s lease went up during the COVID-19 pandemic and Dennehy opted to resign the lease for half the space, leaving him with five chairs. Dennehy said the 10 chairs in storage will be used for a potential third location.
Despite being considered a non-essential business and not being able to use the shop during COVID-19, Dennehy used his tailoring network to send 100,000 surgical masks to different organizations in Nassau County, earning himself and his former wife a community service merit and citation from Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Town of Hempstead Hometown Hero Award.
“Every day is a new day. I love owning a business,” Dennehy said. “Working seven days a week, it can get stressful but I know I wouldn’t be successful working for somebody else and I wouldn’t know what to do without the stress.”
MadMen Barbershop is located at 345 Hillside Ave in Williston Park. More information can be found on their website.
