Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar said that the village is concerned over speeding and traffic violations and is considering bringing in a traffic engineering firm to discuss new traffic regulation methods.
“If our residents take up the mantra to slow down and pay attention to traffic devices it will make it a much safer community,” Ehrbar said at a Board of Trustees meeting Monday night.
According to Ehrbar, after village officials and police examined traffic on Cross Street, the biggest issue is stop signs. Ehrbar said that on top of people speeding in the neighborhood a lot of drivers are neglecting stop signs.
“We’re finding out that 80 to 85, even 90 percent, of people aren’t speeding. The bigger issue is the stop signs,” Ehrbar said. “Now the question is, Do you keep adding stop signs if people aren’t going to stop at them? Do you take some out?”
Ehrbar said that he has alerted 3rd Precinct officers to his concerns, resulting in 11 summonses, but said, “The problem is cops come out and people slow down.”
“We’re going to talk to the board about a traffic engineer, if we want to bring one, if it’s worth the effort or the money,” Ehrbar said.
No board members added any comment on possibly hiring a traffic engineering firm.
Ehrbar said the village will continue researching what it can do to regulate traffic.
“None of us are perfect, but I think we all need to make the effort to try and make a difference in the Village of Williston Park,” Ehrbar said.
The village also reported that on Oct. 13, sanitation workers will not be taking any heavy pickups, but only household garbage.
