
Two men were charged with grand larceny after attempting to scam an elderly Mineola man out of over $37,000, police said.
Ryad Moussi and Jonathan Caton, both 21, of Montreal allegedly told the 86-year-old victim a family member was in legal trouble and they needed money, police said.
The victim withdrew $9,250 on June 7, $18,000 on June 8 and $10,000 on June 9, police said. The authorities were contacted after the victim attempted to withdraw money Saturday and a bank employee recognized the man was the victim of an elder scam.
Moussi and Caton were both arrested June 10 attempting to pick up another payment, police said.
The two are charged with three counts of grand larceny, three counts of conspiracy, three counts of scheme to defraud, attempted grand larceny and attempted scheme to defraud, police said.
