Williston Park officials asked residents to follow the holiday sanitation pickup schedule during the board of trustees meeting Monday night.
If the weekly sanitation schedule is altered because of a holiday, village-wide pickup takes place on the day before or after the holiday, according to the village’s holiday sanitation schedule. During village-wide days, only household garbage will be picked up, not heavy items, bulk items or yard waste.
Building Inspector Kerry Collins said during the weekend of Good Friday, too much trash was left outside and the village may need to consider increasing code enforcement if it remains that way on holidays.
“It’s unfortunate because this is a beautiful neighborhood,” Collins said. “We send a lot of notices out showing our holidays. People might not be happy but we may have to start enforcing it.”
Observed village holidays that affect sanitation for that respective week include Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day and Good Friday.
For commercial properties, garbage pickup is on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with all recycling picked up on Wednesday. Pickup for Monday must be put out that morning after 6 a.m.
Trustee Michael Uttaro added that all food waste should be put in some sort of enclosed container and garbage bags should not be left on the curb or in the street to prevent animals from getting into the trash.
In unrelated village news, Trustee William O’Brien thanked those who attended the village’s Little League parade last Saturday. O’Brien specifically thanked village employees, the Fire Department and auxiliary police for putting the event together and keeping everyone safe.
“We’re looking forward to another great season,” O’Brien said. “Please come down for a game—we have them almost every night.”
Little Make a Difference Day is taking place on Saturday, April 22, at 9 a.m. The event, put on by the village’s Beautification Committee, celebrates Earth Day and will be meeting in the Village Hall parking lot.
Garbage bags and gloves will be provided, but residents are asked to bring their own rakes and shovels.
The next meeting for the Williston Park Board of Trustees will be Monday, May 15.
