The Mineola Street Fair on Sunday, Oct. 2 will be more family-focused compared to past years, chamber of commerce Vice President Tony Lubrano told village trustees Wednesday.
“We are trying to turn it into a Mineola family fun day type of event,” Lubrano said. “We’re determined to make this the biggest and best one ever.”
Lubrano, who owned Piccola Bussola on Jericho Turnpike, said a few years ago the chamber used a private company that helped with the organization of the street fair but attracted vendors that made it resemble something closer to a flea market.
Details are still being finalized but Lubrano said residents can expect food, games, music and fun on Jericho Turnpike from Sunday morning into the afternoon.
On Sept. 24, a section of 2nd Street between Mineola Boulevard and 2nd Street Deli will be closed off to conduct an outside gathering.
Lubrano said the event will be organized similarly to the St. Patrick’s day event that was held outside The St. James Restaurant and has had discussions with the owner of Spaghettini and Burrito Boulevard and Kevin Lalezarian of Lalezarian Properties, which owns the Morgan Parc apartment complex.
There will be live music and Lubrano said the owners are committed to making that section of the village more lively and hope to conduct similar events on a more consistent basis in the future depending on the success of the September festivities.
Registrations are currently open for the 9th annual Tunnel to Towers walk and walk, conducted by Warrior for a Cause, of which Lubrano is president.
The path symbolizes firefighter Stephen Siller’s walk from the foot of the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, when his Brooklyn Squad 1 truck was stopped at the entrance of the tunnel due to security concerns.
Lubrano said hundreds of people attend the event and encourages those interested to register by Labor Day at the latest.
Registration costs $125 for adults and $65 for children 14 and under and includes shirts, breakfast, transportation to and from and lunch.
For nine years, Warriors for a Cause’s Night on the Town has raised over $1.2 million for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Lubrano said this year the event’s proceeds will benefit The Michael Magro Foundation, established in 2005 and named after Michael Magro, who died at 13 years old due to Leukemia.
Michael’s mother, Terrie, was a physician liaison at NYU Langone in Mineola.
Night on the Town will take place Monday, Oct. 24 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 249 Jericho Turnpike. The event showcases Long Island’s restaurants, bakeries and wineries and will feature live entertainment.
Tickets are $125 per person.
