The Village of Mineola is ready to jump into the summer season starting with the John S. DaVanzo Community Pool at Wilson Park opening on Saturday, June 18.
The pool complex, located at 230 Liberty Ave., will be open Monday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Patrons are required to have a leisure pass, which is available on the village’s website.
“Preparations are well underway for a normal summer at the pool and we have construction going on at the parks,” Mayor Paul Pereira said during his report on the June 1 board of trustees meeting. “We have some construction going on, work on the tennis courts and other improvements which will hopefully be done very soon.”
Pereira added the village is preparing its summer concert series beginning on June 18 at the Memorial Park Amphitheater with Swingtime Big Band at 7:30 p.m. The village will host 10 concerts total from June to September, with the second one on Friday, July 8 featuring Marc Ratner’s Premier Showband at 7:30 p.m.
The Mineola Portuguese Center will be hosting its annual carnival after a two-year hiatus from Friday, June 10 to Sunday, June 12 at Wilson Park. Pereira said the carnival has been a mainstay in the village for about 40 years now.
Mineola’s Portugal Day parade will also be held on June 12 and will end at the carnival.
During Pereira’s remarks, he thanked the community for the turnout showing during Memorial Day and both the Mineola Fire Department and Boy Scouts Troopy 45.
The two organizations overtook the holiday’s responsibilities, including the parade, from the Mineola VFW Post 1305 and American Legion, who were unable to do so on their own. Pereira also acknowledged the village’s chamber of commerce for handing out 1,000’s of American-made American flags for residents to wave on Monday
“What a great job they did and I know that they’re already working on making it even bigger and better for next year,” Pereira said. “For me, what was most impressive was not only seeing the number of people supporting the marchers but the number of people that stayed at Memorial Park for the memorial service. That really touched me that so many people stayed and paid their respects to our veterans who died in combat.”
Trustee Janine Sartori reported that the Mineola Athletic Association’s Family Fun Day will be held Saturday, June 11 and will include a DJ from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a bouncy house, carnival games and a home run derby.
