The Mineola Board of Education recognized learners throughout the district at the final meeting of the school year, bringing their yearlong total to 402 learners recognized.

“There are a lot fo good things going on, a lot of things to celebrate,” Superintendent Michael Nagler said at the beginning of the meeting Thursday night. “I personally can’t get enough of it, let’s see if we can top that next year.”

The Mineola school district describes all students as learners.

First to be recognized were three learners from Hampton Street School: Vivian Bond, Ava Fischman and Joanna Escaleria. Principal Leigh Shaw said the learners were being honored for their annual reflections competition, which was held through the PTA.

This year’s theme was “Show your voice” and Leigh said the artwork was hanging in the building for most of the year.

Mineola Middle School’s fifth and seventh grade teams were recognized for winning Best Capital Defense Project in their respective division.

The seventh grade team, named the Magnetized Mineolians, included Grant Adell, Zalen Parekh, Rachel Fogarty, Knox Pace, Kimberly Sandoval, Joseph Meehan & Jaden Hsiu. The middle school’s fifth grade team were the Coding Legends.

Middle School science teachers Nicole LoCurto and Ellen McGlade-McCulloh each received certificates for the school’s participation of PSEG Long Island’s I am EmPowered program, where students research and identify local environmental issues and solutions.

The district had five semifinalist teams and one contest winner.

Mineola High School learners were also recognized for their work in the fields of computer science, robotics and science research, said Principal Nicole Culella.

Sara Ahmed, Hannah Matthew and MaryEllen Steiner were recognized for receiving an affiliate honorable mention by the Greater New York City Affiliate of the National Center for Women and Information Technology.

Skyla Azeharie was honored for receiving a national honorable mention award. Ines Graca, Genesis Majano, Isabella Kaiser, Cathreen Paul, Jessica Molina, Michaela Quinn and Fatimah Shaikh were honored for receiving the affiliate rising star award and Julia Manevitz was honored as an affiliate winner and national honorable mention winner.
