The East Williston Board of Trustees continued a public hearing to December to amend the village’s Code of Public Conduct.
On Dec. 11, the board will hold a public hearing on an expansion of the Public Conduct Code that would prohibit the vaping, ingestion or smoking of cannabis and tobacco in public spaces, public urination and disorderly conduct.
The amendment could not be voted on Monday night since the addition of tobacco to the resolution was made during the Board of Trustees meeting and will be voted on Dec. 11.
East Williston Mayor Bonnie Parente said one of the reasons for expanding the code was so the village’s security officer could issue tickets for violations if needed.
The board also unanimously approved a local law allowing the village board to set fees by resolution for landscaping permits in the village.
Village Attorney Jeffrey Blinkoff said the local law makes the existing code clearer, which includes similar resolutions for other fees in the village and was sparked by a recent change to require landscaping licenses for commercial landscapers.
In unrelated village news, Parente thanked the residents who attended the Veterans Day celebration on Saturday, Nov. 11, calling it “a beautiful ceremony.”
At the village green Saturday morning residents were joined by the local VFW, American Legion, East Williston Fire Department and local Scouts, among others. Wreaths were laid at the foot of the war memorial while a quartet from The Wheatley School played music before resident and United States Marine Staff Sergeant Kevin Kennedy spoke to the crowd.
Parente’s remarks were echoed by resident Michael Guglielmo, who was also impressed by the village’s efforts.
“I don’t have enough experience with other villages, but I think we do a great job,” Guglielmo said. “We’re a really tiny village and I feel like we shine in these moments. I don’t know what other villages do, but it can’t be better than what we’re doing, I really believe that.”
On Thanksgiving morning at 9 a.m. the annual 5K Turkey Trot and Drumstick Dash will be taking place at Devlin Field. Registrations received by Monday, Nov. 20, will be $20 while registrations after that day and the day of the event will be $40. All proceeds benefit the East Williston Fire Department.
The next meeting for the East Williston Board of Trustees will be held on Monday, Dec. 11.
