Police: teen jumped from Fire Island ferry

Suffolk County Police arrested a 17-year-old from Manhasset Tuesday night after he jumped off a Fire Island ferry boat, police said.

The 80-foot-long Fire Island Belle was headed toward Bay Shore Terminal when the teen jumped from the boat into Penataquit Creek around 10:20 p.m., police said. The ferry’s captain, Victor Klipp Jr., was able to guide the teen to a ladder, and he reboarded the ship.

Marine Bureau officers  arrested him on a charge of disorderly conduct, which can be punishable by up to 15 days in jail, police said.

The Coast Guard also opened an investigation into the incident, because it potentially interfered with the safe operation of a ship. The penalty can be a $25,000 fine, police said.

The teen wasn’t injured, nor were any of the 60 passengers aboard the ferry at the time, police said.

He will be arraigned in Suffolk County’s First District Court at a later date.
