The East Williston Board of Education elections feature two candidates running for one office.

Board President Mark Kamberg is being challenged by Denise Tercynski in the May 16 election.

Kamberg is seeking his sixth term, having served on the board since 2008. He has lived in Albertson for over two decades and is the president of S. Kamberg & Company, a food ingredients company based in Great Neck that his father founded.

Tercynski, a Mineola resident since 2011, currently works with Great Neck Public Schools in their athletics and recreation office and is a current member of The Wheatley School PTO executive board. She has also been involved with the North Side School PTO and Willets Road School PTO executive board.

Also on the ballot is the district’s adopted $69.1 million budget for the upcoming school year. The spending plan represents a $2.8 million, or 4.19%, increase in expenditures and a 2.30% increase in the property tax levy.

Within the budget, 78.3% of funds will go toward programming, which includes instruction, student support services and transportation.

Capital costs, which include the operation and maintenance of the district, amount to 11.2% of the total budget.

Administrative costs account for 10.5% of the budget.

District residents will also be voting on Proposition #2, which would allow the district to establish a capital reserve fund of $7 million for 10 years. The capital improvements involved with the fund would be roof improvements at The Wheatley School’s IMC and Willets Road School gym.

Additional capital improvements include hallway wall reconstruction, cafeteria and wood shop renovations at Wheatley, athletic field renovations at Willets and district-wide HVAC improvements.

District voting takes place on Tuesday, May 16, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in The Wheatley School’s gymnasium.
