The community is invited to Temple Beth-El for “Jewish Sports Legends,” presented by Alan Freedman, director of the Jewish Sports Heritage Association, on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m.
Freedman will discuss the history of the Jewish-American experience in sports from the turn of the 20th century until today.
The term Jews in Sports is thought to be an oxymoron. In this program, he examines Jewish involvement in sports and how Jewish accomplishments in sports help offer a starting point for discussions of stereotypes and prejudice.
This presentation causes us to question the many stereotypes we carry about diverse groups.
The goal of JSHA is to help educate the public about the role Jewish men and women have played and continue to play in the world of sports, an area of Jewish accomplishment often overlooked.
Before creating JSHA, Freedman was the founder and director of the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, a role he held for 23 years.
The morning begins with a bagel and lox breakfast at 10 a.m., followed by the presentation. Fee is $10 per person, and children under 13 are free. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to JSHA. This program is presented by Brotherhood of Temple Beth-El.
