Golf Joy Inc., a one part golf simulator and dedicated board game space, was officially approved for a conditional use application permit by the Village of Great Neck Plaza Board of Trustees at the board meeting Wednesday.

At the board’s Sept. 13 meeting, the Golf Joy applicants were asked to fine-tune their policies and procedures, which they presented before the board last week before the unanimous vote.

Village of Great Neck Plaza Mayor Ted Rosen expressed a warm welcome.

“As we say to all our stores, we welcome you into the village,” he said, “and we hope you have many years of success.” Rosen also suggested that Golf Joy Inc. consider joining the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce, to be included in the village newsletter and hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

One aspect of the application is that Golf Joy Inc. has not yet signed a lease agreement with the landlord, but it has obtained the landlord’s permission to proceed with the application process. It was confirmed that there are no plans to apply for a liquor license, eliminating any potential board concerns regarding alcohol-related activities on the premises.

One of the puzzling points the last time the application was before the board was the status of a liquor license, since Golf Joy’s initial application requested that it be able to serve beer and wine. Now, Jonathan Mei, Golf Joy Inc.’s operations manager, said that no alcohol will be served and individuals must be at least 21 years of age to use the golf simulators or be accompanied by an adult if between 15 and 21.

For minors seeking membership, parental consent is necessary, and the minimum age for membership eligibility is 15. However, individuals aged 15 to 21 must have an accompanying adult present and proof of age is required. Currently, the establishment is launching with a membership limit of 100 individuals.

“We’re a small business hoping that we would potentially be able to get 100 members,” Mei told the board, “but we haven’t gotten to that point yet.”

Golf Joy Inc. plans to offer a variety of games, including classic board games like Battleship, Monopoly, chess and more. There will be no card tables and staff will closely monitor the game tables to prevent any gambling, Mei said.

Tables for games will rotate every 30 to 45 minutes to encourage new interactions and suggest alternative activities during breaks. If a game extends beyond this timeframe they will be allowed to continue.

The establishment will not provide any food or snacks but will allow outside food into the space but not during game play, Mei said.

Golf Joy Inc. will be open from Monday through Saturday and opening day is planned for sometime before Thanksgiving.
