For the past 30 years, seventh graders at Willets Road School in the East Williston School District have participated in an outdoor education program at an off-site location.
The program is a weeklong outdoor adventure where they camp for four nights and attend various classes led by instructors throughout the day, as well as engage in community building activities throughout meal times and evenings. Through guided discovery, communal living and hands-on exploration, students build on character development and learn about the interrelationships that exist both socially and in nature.
This unique experience assists students in the development of leadership and communication skills, in gaining self-confidence, learning about the environment and human impact, and in developing new friendships with peers.
