The Silverstein Hebrew Academy (SHA) recently offered its preschool students an opportunity to touch and study a real Torah, part of the SHA’s commitment to active learning in the classroom.

During the class, children had the opportunity to touch, feel, and interact with the Torah with the guidance of Rabbi Zalman Baumgarten. The Hebrew letters came to life as Rabbi Zalman Baumgarten guided young students in understanding the significance of the Torah to the Jewish people and the practice of Judaism, seamlessly weaving ancient texts into students’ curriculum.

Students were also given the chance to look at the different elements needed to read and interact with the Torah, relating material they are learning in the classroom to lifelong learning skills they are developing.

The activity was one of the SHA’s ongoing efforts to offer an integrated dual curriculum, which features a rigorous general studies program with an array of Jewish studies that aims to foster both religious spirituality and character and a secular education.
