Sewanhaka Robotics Team succeeds at FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament

The Sewanhaka Central High School District’s Robotics Team, comprised of students from all five school buildings, competed at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament held at Sewanhaka High School on Jan. 14.

In this year’s FIRST Tech Challenge Competition, POWERPLAYSM presented by Raytheon Technologies, alliances of robots score points by traversing a 12′ x 12′ field and placing plastic cones in various locations and patterns.

Sewanhaka’s team, RoboPandas, received multiple awards, including a First Place Think Award, Second Place Inspire Award, Second Place Connect Award, Second Place Innovate Award, Third Place Control Award, Third Place Motivate Award and Third Place Design Award. The team qualified for the Long Island Regional Championships scheduled for March 12.

Though the RoboPandas only competed at Saturday’s event, district students were present on both days as volunteers while a second Qualifying Tournament was held at the school on Jan. 15. Additionally, students from the district’s Culinary Arts Program provided catering services for the volunteers.
