Six Roslyn High School students placed exceptionally well at the final round of the 2023 Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF) — held March 5, 2024 at Crest Hollow Country Club.

LISEF is a competition for the most advanced high school projects, and gives students the opportunity to present to professionals in their subject areas from local universities, scientific institutions, and professionals in the field.

Sophomore Tessla Chan won first place for her work on a convolutional neural network (CNN) to distinguish between multiple types of leukemia cells. The win earned her a trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, CA this May.

“Tessla’s initiative and her ability to work independently are remarkable for someone her age,” said Dr. Allyson Weseley, who runs the research program at RHS.

Ethan Berkowitz and Alexandra Kanner were awarded honorable hentions. Cayden Shen, Aasiya Zaidi, and Shayla Zheng each clinched a third place award.
