On Saturday, March 2, 2024, members of the Roslyn High School Code Club hosted the 2024 Overload Hackathon!
Sixty students from multiple school districts competed to make the best possible projects they could code within a 9AM – 5PM time frame.
The Roslyn Code Club collaborated with local businesses, including Gino’s Parlor, Carlos Pizza, and Delicacies Gourmet to make the event happen.
To help generate project ideas, three code club members held workshops teaching various coding practices. Neville Pethani taught a lesson on Godot, a 2D game engine; Justin Margulies gave a lesson on Java GUI implementation; and Ethan Berkowitz presented the inner workings of coding an AI.
Competing for most impressive, most creative, and people’s choice, the competitors used their knowledge from the workshops to make a project involving their school mascot. Roslyn students created a bulldog “chef instructor” that taught how to cook different recipes. The winner of the people’s choice was a cleverly engineered VEX robot programmed to knight students.
