During the recent library unit, New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District students learned about the Randolph Caldecott Medal, which is annually awarded to the preceding year’s “most distinguished American picture book for children.”
Hillside Grade School and Manor Oaks School librarian Natalie Hartmann and Garden City Park School and New Hyde Park Road School librarian Sharon Layburn selected 12 books they felt would be good contenders for this year’s medal. Each grade-level read the 12 books, either in-class or in their library lesson, and then voted on their favorites using Google Forms.
After tallying districtwide votes, “Farmhouse” by Sophie Blackall was selected as New Hyde Park-Garden City Park’s number one choice. On Jan. 30, “Hot Dog” by Doug Salat was selected as the Caldecott Medal winner.
