Hillside Grade School sixth-graders in the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District researched STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers as a starting point for their upcoming study of the engineering process.
Under the guidance of teacher Laura Donovan, students researched a variety of careers, including information technology specialist and different types of engineers. Each sixth-grade class conducted their research using classroom Chromebooks during science and engineering, investigating educational websites to find career descriptions, the skills and education needed to secure these careers, salary ranges, job benefits and drawbacks.
Students created inventive and colorful posters using the information they found and presented their findings to their peers. Ms. Donovan said the research projects have sparked enthusiasm amongst the classes, with students excited to learn more about engineering.
