Garden City Park School third graders experimented ways to keep ice pops frozen under heat in their recent Project Lead the Way lessons with Salvatore Giurlanda.
For the experiment, the control was a tissue box. The students were able to add different variables, such as cardboard, foam and bubble wrap, to act as insulators. Their constraints were no glue or tape. Students worked in groups to create their boxes.
After the ice pops were left under the heat lamp, the students measured how much melted liquid was there. They passed if there was 25 mL or less of liquid. Any group who lost more than 25 mL of liquid was able to try again the following week after discussing what might have gone wrong
