As the culmination of their math unit on decimal operations, Garden City Park School fifth graders in Maya Guzman and Margaret Ollen’s classes hosted a grand opening of their restaurants on Nov. 21.

Students worked individually or in pairs to create their restaurants. They were responsible for coming up with the restaurant’s theme, creating a Google site for the restaurant, and making both an online and handheld menu. The menu, which included appetizers, entrees, desserts and drinks was priced by the students.

During the grand opening event, students from both classes were given a scenario by their teachers, such as “you need four appetizers, six main courses, four desserts and six drinks for dinner on vacation” or “you need two appetizers, six main courses, three desserts and six drinks for dinner for a family of six.” They then went to the other fifth grade classroom to “buy” food from a peer’s restaurant. The students were tasked with adding up their totals and figuring out the tax.
