John Lewis Childs School fifth graders participated in a DNA Extraction Lab, led by a representative from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center, on Feb. 2.

Students discussed DNA and genes before starting the lab, “DNA Extraction from Wheat Germ.” They worked in pairs to extract DNA from dry wheat germ, using water, soap solution and ethanol. At the conclusion of the lab, the students made necklaces out of their extracted DNA in the tube.
