Floral Park-Bellerose School sixth graders in Kristen Orsillo’s class headed out to the school’s courtyard to test their projects for the annual Egg Drop Challenge on Dec. 5.

As part of their science unit on Newton’s laws of motion, the students learned about gravity. They watched a video on the Mars rover and how it successfully landed on the planet. They were challenged to create their own landing gear for an egg to see if the contraption could defy the force of gravity and protect the egg from cracking.

The students utilized parachutes, balloons, tissue boxes, cardboard boxes and more to create their landing gear. One by one, the students went up the steps of the courtyard and dropped their landing gear.
