Shibley Day Camp in the Village of Roslyn is seeking to install a new pool, increasing the number of active pools to five.
At a Roslyn Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, Heath Levine, owner and director of the camp, and other camp officials discussed their permit application to install a new pool. Levine said during a public hearing that the new pool would be on the southwest corner of the property and would be next to another pool.
There are six pools at the camp on Warner Avenue, with two currently inactive. Levine said once this pool is installed for the summer of 2023, one of the abandoned pools will be filled.
As for the pool itself, it is projected to be 1,500 square feet and can hold a maximum of over 100 users. The pool’s depth is not set but will not exceed five feet. There will be no diving board. Levine said that policy at the camp is to have one lifeguard per 25 pool users, but they will have more supervision during camp.
“The children are always accompanied beside the lifeguards who are on duty or are accompanied by their counselors in the group,” Levine said. “So there is a lot of supervision as soon as they enter.”
The Board of Trustees, aside from asking about the specifics of the pool and background questions, wanted to find out the nearby residents’ response to the pool proposal. Levine said that they initially went door to door and got signatures of neighbors who answered and plan on doing so again.
The board agreed to move forward with the application while reserving a decision until trustees can check out the property themselves alongside Levine and other staff members to see the layout.
The next Roslyn Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 12.
