The Roslyn School District is in great financial health, an auditor told the Board of Education Thursday night when he presented the district’s audit report for the fiscal year ending on June 30.
Robert Daniele, a partner at PKF O’Connor Davies who performed the audit, said the audit assesses financial records, which the firm then evaluates to form an opinion.
Daniele said there was no fraud or allegations of fraud found in the district through the audit.
He added that the district’s tax has increased, but was within the 2% tax cap. He said the district has never exceeded the tax cap.
The Roslyn Board of Education went forward in accepting the audit report, with some additional comments still to be addressed in the report after the fact.
The Board of Education also received various gifts from the superintendent, the district and students for Board Appreciation Week, including a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by Roslyn High School senior Lacey Barrett. Superintendent Allison Brown invited Barrett to perform for the board after the superintendent said she was moved by her singing at a recent school rally.
Another gift from Brown included jars filled with pieces of paper including uplifting comments from colleagues, intended to provide the board members with some pick-me-ups in their times of strife.
“Read it when you need it,” Brown said.
Included in the moment of appreciation were comments from district union representatives, expressing their appreciation for the board’s leadership of the district.
The board also took a moment to acknowledge the violence in Israel and Palestine, with comments from Board President Meryl Waxman Ben-Levy expressing the grief of the district as they protect students from the horrors.
“May we find the strength we need to lead and to serve,” Ben-Levy said. “It has been said that those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it. Throughout the generations of time immemorial good eventually triumphs over evil —fueled by the strength of our love. So may it be now. Make no mistake. It will. It must. All of humanity depends on it and our children are watching.”
Brown thanked Ben-Levy for speaking on behalf of the board and district.
“We are deeply saddened and deeply concerned about the ongoing inexcusable violence which has resulted in the loss of innocent lives and widespread suffering,” Brown said.
