Officials presented a $250,000 check to fund Donald Street Park’s recently completed restoration project in North Hempstead Monday.
Several basketball courts in the park have had their surfaces entirely redone. There are also new backboards and nets, fencing, gates and a splash pad.
State Sen. Anna Kaplan (D-North Hills), Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Town Councilmember Peter Zuckerman (D-Roslyn) and North Hempstead Parks officials were among those present at the ceremony.
The two Town representatives thanked Kaplan for securing the grant. DeSena said residents will enjoy the new improvements.
“Donald Street Park is a local treasure,” she said. “This investment in the future of the park will ensure that families will be able to continue to make memories here for generations to come.”
Zuckerman shared a similar sentiment. He said the partnership between Kaplan and the Town government paved the way for their commitment to improve the park.
“We are tremendously grateful for Sen. Kaplan’s continued support for the Town of North Hempstead,” he said. “The grant funding she was able to secure for the Donald Street Park basketball courts helped the Town fulfill our commitment to improving this wonderful park.”
Kaplan said that since the COVID-19 pandemic, many people now value neighborhood parks even more. With this in mind, she said that she wanted to make certain that they were beautiful, functional and safe.
“I was proud to deliver the funding that allowed the Town of North Hempstead to revitalize Donald Street Park,” she said. “I’m thrilled that our community is already making great use of the new basketball courts, handball courts and splash pads.”
