Garbage spill on Old Northern Boulevard causes lane closings

Police closed a stretch of Old Northern Boulevard between West Shore Road and Mineola Avenue, in Roslyn, on Wednesday after a garbage truck overturned, spilling its refuse, Nassau County police said.

After the 11 a.m. accident, police closed both lanes of Old Northern Boulevard until 3 p.m., while officials cleaned up the spilled garbage, police said

At 3 p.m., the westbound lanes were reopened, but the eastbound lanes remained closed until 3 a.m. on Thursday morning, police said.

Carole Trottere, a spokeswoman for the Town of North Hempstead, said the truck was leaving the town’s transfer station on West Shore Road and was headed to an upstate landfill.

Police said a single driver was in the truck at the time of the accident, the cause of which is unknown.

The truck belonged to Pocono Logistics, a subcontractor of Progressive Waste Solutions, Trottere said.

The accident did not cause any injuries, police said.
