The East Williston Board of Education recognized the accomplishments of several teams and athletes from the winter sports program at its meeting on Monday.
Director of Athletics Michael Scaturro introduced players who won honors in bowling, indoor track, basketball, wrestling and gymnastics.
Coach Mindy Schwartz led the boys bowling team to a first place finish in its second season in the conference with a 7-3 record. The boys finished first in the small schools division and second in the county tournament.
The girls indoor track team featured 11 athletes who earned All-County and All-Conference honors, said Scaturro. The team finished first in the conference championships and second in the county Class C championships, which earned coaches D.J. Paulson, Kevin Murphy and Robert Capobianco recognition as conference coaches of the year.
Scaturro introduced varsity basketball player James O’Connell, who led his team to the No. 3 seed in the Class B playoffs with an average of 21.5 points per game, fourth highest in Nassau County and 10th highest on Long Island. For his outstanding play, O’Connell was voted conference player of the year by a committee of coaches.
Also cited was varsity wrestler Yan Jun Lin, who was ranked 17th in New York state. He won the Uniondale wrestling tournament and participated in the state wrestling championships in Albany.
In girls gymnastics, Emma Bergsohn finished second in the balance beam and uneven bars events in Nassau County, which earned her a spot in the New York state championships in Buffalo, said Scaturro.
Turning to business matters, the board approved a proposal to submit to the voters the expenditure of $5.2 million from the capital reserve fund for various capital improvement projects.
The budget vote will be held on May 17.
