Thomaston residents, please don’t be misled. In the contested election on March 15, the candidates to vote for are Nick Toumbekis and Karen Siegel.
The opposition has distributed fliers and gone on social media, repeating eye-catching allegations of fraud and dishonesty. They have named their party “Honest Neighbors,” clearly implying that the current village mayor and government is dishonest.
None of this is true. I fear it reflects what we are seeing in the country at large: vigorous disinformation campaigns spread in print and social media to “take out” political opponents.
We don’t have to stand for it in Thomaston. Having been involved for decades in Village government and having chaired the Landmarks Commission that recently designated the old Tower Ford building as a landmark, I know the mayor and our trustees to be dedicated and honest, receptive to the viewpoints of others.
They all work without compensation of any kind as they have done for years. We have a high level of services, Village taxes haven’t risen in a decade, and we enjoy a friendly and helpful atmosphere in the Village Hall and on our streets.
Vote on March 15 to reject disinformation and to prevent people from bringing divisive and mean-spirited tactics to our Village government. Things are good now, and we need to vote to keep them that way.
