When deciding on a candidate to vote for in any election, for any position at any level, one should ask a few basic questions about each candidate before making this decision. In the upcoming Great Neck School Board election, I’ve applied these questions, and here are my findings:
1) Has the candidate shown that they fully understand the position they are running for? Have they displayed that they understand everything they will be responsible for deciding on and also what is outside their control?
The incumbent, Donna Peirez, by virtue of being a current board member, but also in her campaign to get elected to the position, has shown her knowledge of the issues facing the entirety of our massive district. This includes things like unfunded mandates, adult education, building capacity, and many other areas that one probably would not realize are essential board matters.
On the other hand, I have seen no proof Ms. Peirez’s opponent, has any knowledge of any matters related to the school district outside of his own personal experience.
2) Has the candidate made themselves available to answer questions and listen to concerns from a broad population of voters, especially concerns from populations that they may not interact with as much as others?
Ms. Peirez has held several online forums where voters could listen to her background, experience, and qualifications and answer questions. Furthermore, the community set up two “Meet the Candidates” nights where both candidates were invited to attend. Ms. Peirez gladly accepted the invitation.
Ms. Peirez’s opponent chose not to attend.
3) Has the candidate shown that they have the skills, experience, and background to make the important decision affecting the voters?
Ms. Peirez, as a lifelong educator, and current Board Member, has shown she has depth of knowledge to make sound decisions, helping maintain our school district at the high level of performance our voters demand.
Ms. Peirez’s opponent has offered no description of his skills, background, education, or career. In every election I’ve seen, even candidates running as “outsiders” present a way how their business, artistic, or educational experience apply to the position they are running for.
In summary, Donna Peirez has shown she has the background, experience, knowledge, and decision-making abilities to continue succeeding as a board member. Ms. Peirez should be re-elected.
