Readers Write: An American dictator is judicially born
In the case of Trump v. United States, Chief Justice John Roberts’ opinion decreed that presidents are absolutely immune from criminal prosecution for their “official acts” including starting wars of aggression and defying congressional subpoenas. For all other acts, “presumptively immune” would also apply based upon the incomprehensible legal standard of “we’ll know it when we see it.”
The “official immunity” would apply to all orders the president gives to the Justice Department including bribing the attorney general to indict a political opponent on trumped-up charges or ordering the military to assassinate a political rival. It would even provide immunity if a military coup was organized that allowed him to hold onto power or take a bribe in exchange for a pardon. This would mean that Trump could do whatever he wants like a king who could do no wrong.

With Trump in power, he would nominate more right-wing zealots who would further deform our courts, worsen women’s rights to choose, gut the Voter Rights Act and accelerate the rollback of civil rights. Big secret money would flow in freely, ensuring political gerrymandering and increasing voter suppression. Officially, he then could gut the U.S. Civil Service and replace them with MAGA supporters, send in the military to shoot peaceful protesters and also jail critics. Trump would in fact become our nation’s first dictator.

But wait. Trump is not yet the president. Fact is it’s Joseph R. Biden in that position and he will be until Jan. 20, 2025. Therefore “Dictator Biden” has the power to do whatever he wants. For example, topping the list would be the dissolution of the current Supreme Court, possibly even appointing Supreme Court justices of his choice. He would overturn Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, thus reinstating Roe v. Wade. Overturning Citizens United would be next, once again disallowing corporations and other outside groups to spend unlimited money on elections. This would be just the beginning.

Regarding the Jan. 6 insurrection, Trump would immediately be placed in jail, together with all his lawyers who made a mockery of the judicial system.

And lastly, after the above is accomplished, Trump v. the United States would also be overturned, allowing the United States to return to the great nation it has been.
