Readers Write: Allison O’Brien Silva for Manhasset Board of Education

My husband Henrique, our three girls (6th, 4th, and K), and I have loved being part of this community since we moved here in 2014.

We have been inspired by all of you who contribute the best of yourselves to help make Manhasset so exceptional. With each passing year, my family and I have become more involved in the fabric of Manhasset, and I am seeking to further my contributions to our community by serving on the Board of Education.

I am running because I want our children to have the best public education possible. I want our children to be challenged, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential as they make the journey from their first days in Kindergarten to their culminating moment in cap and gown on our high school lawn.

Now that the acute crisis of educating our children during the pandemic is behind us, if elected, I will refocus our priorities back to delivering what I believe makes a Manhasset education so valuable:

• A rigorous, comprehensive academic program that inspires curiosity and intellectual growth;
• A wide variety of sports, arts, community service, and extracurricular activities that encourage growth outside the classroom;
• A full spectrum of support and guidance for all students.

Delivering an exceptional educational experience can only happen when our board, administration, teachers, staff, and community all work together to shape the path forward. Our board can only lead effectively when our community joins as a true partner in the board’s oversight and decision-making process.

If elected, I will work to transform how the board communicates, both formally and informally, to encourage iterative, dynamic dialogue, and ensure that input from the community directly informs the board’s decisions.

If elected, I will also work to help shape a budget that supports excellence in a fiscally responsible manner. Our community entrusts the board with financial oversight, and I assure you I will take that responsibility very seriously.

My business experience and community involvement have prepared me to be an effective, contributing member of the board.

After earning my MBA at Columbia Business School, I worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, where I developed and implemented best practices in leadership, communications, strategy, and operations while advising leaders of Fortune 500 companies.

In our community, I have had the pleasure of working with many of you through my involvement in Girl Scouts and over the years when I was a parent representative for my daughters’ classes.

I will bring the lessons and best practices from these experiences to my service on the board, where I will be fully committed to do what’s best for our children.

I ask for your support and your vote to elect me to Manhasset’s Board of Education on Tuesday, May 17.
