To the Editor,

Yet again Larry Penner submits his annual opinion piece on celebrating Earth Day all year long. While he admittedly has not had an opinion piece posted since last year encouraging us to eat White Castle hamburgers and cheeseburgers, yet again Mr. Penner ignores the environmental consequences of factory farming.
So yet again, I urge my Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk neighbors and in particular Mr. Penner to visit the website of People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

View the videos of the brutal, horrific treatment of cows, pigs, and chickens on factory farms. While I cannot claim to have witnessed this first hand, I did witness the brutal treatment of chickens at the beginning of the winter of 2021 – 2022.

I was on East Tremont Ave. in the Bronx and I observed for myself the brutal, horrific conditions under which chickens are crammed into cages and transported in freezing weather. I witnessed one of the cages fall to the ground with a loud thump, and can only imagine what the terrified chickens must have experienced.

Yet again, I lay no claim to perfection but I am trying. I eat oatmeal and grapes for breakfast instead of bacon and sausage. When I order Chinese I order vegetables. But most important of all I don’t urge other people to be kind to the environment while encouraging them to eat the products of factory farming.
