Shops and restaurants across Port Washington will offer discounts and sales as part of Small Business Saturday this weekend.

“It was started by American Express [in 2010] and we’ve been involved in it since then,” said Bobbie Polay, director of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce. “But every year our promotion for it has increased.”

Polay said shop owners agreed that the day had helped businesses, and said the chamber was increasing promotional efforts to keep locals’ money in the neighborhood.

One way to do that is through partnerships with other local groups, like Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington. Lisa Grossman, director of development for the group, said that anyone who signs up for a membership with the group will receive additional discounts.

Support local journalism by subscribing to your Blank Slate Media community newspaper for just $50 a year.

“There’s about 30 stores and restaurants where you can get an additional 10 to 15 percent off,” she said.

Membership in Residents costs $60 for an individual and $125 for a family, and also gives members free access to Party in the Park, along with discounted tickets to the group’s gala. It also helps to pay for murals and gardens.
