The Village of Sands Point will be receiving a $3 million state grant for water infrastructure upgrades to protect the local drinking water from contaminants.
The Water Infrastructure Improvement grant is a New York State grant intended to “help municipalities fund critical wastewater and drinking water infrastructure projects,” according to the state’s website.
“These New York State grants will go a long way toward protecting the purity of our region’s drinking water without dramatically increasing costs to Sands Point ratepayers,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton (D–Glen Cove) said. “I thank New York State and Gov. Hochul for prioritizing Nassau County’s environmental needs in this recent round of infrastructure grants.”
The grant will be used to install an advanced oxidation process and granular activated carbon treatment system. These infrastructural improvements will remove dioxane and perfluorooctanoic acid from the drinking water.
The grant was awarded by Gov. Kathy Hochul and announced Thursday.
Efforts to contact the Sands Point Water Department for comment prior to publication were unavailing.
