A Manorhaven man was arrested on Thursday morning after assaulting a police officer, according to a release from the Nassau County Police Department.
Officials said police responded to a 911 call for loud explosions at the intersection of Kirkwood Road and Manorhaven Boulevard early Thursday morning before 3 a.m. Upon arrival, according to officials, police found Argelis Alvayero, 31, setting off fireworks.
Police approached Alvayero, but he did not respond to their requests and allegedly attempted to reach into his car. Officials said Alvayero became more combative and agitated with police as they attempted to place him into custody.
A firework canister allegedly fell out of Alvayero’s pocket during the struggle, with officials ultimately placing him under arrest. An officer involved in the struggle sustained minor injuries to both knees, his right hand and left elbow, according to the release.
Alvayero, who was arrested last year, was charged with second-degree assault, storage of explosives, explosives without licenses and certificates, unlawfully selling fireworks and resisting arrest. Officials said he was scheduled to be arraigned at the First District Court in Hempstead on Friday, but efforts to reach law enforcement for further comment were unavailing.
Alvayero’s prior arrest in April 2021, officials said, resulted in him being charged with third-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree criminal mischief, third-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing and unlawful imprisonment in the second-degree. Officials said he was released without bail.
