Nobody was injured after a gas line leak outside of Daly Elementary School forced its evacuation, Port Washington Superintendent Michael Hynes said.
The incident occurred early Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Hynes said roadwork being done outside by the Port Washington Water District led to the gas line leak.
Efforts to reach the Port Washington Water District for comments were unavailing.
Following district emergency protocols and approval to do so, the building was evacuated by 9 a.m. Students were then safely relocated to Guggenheim Elementary School.
“I’d like to thank the police, the fire department, the first responders. I mean, they were all there at Daly,” said Hynes. “And our building leaders, they helped everybody move there in the safest way possible. So that’s to be commended.”
Hynes also praised the students’ parents for their patience and for allowing the district to secure the safety of their children.
District officials were notified at 10:15 a.m. that they could return to Daly after first responders had deemed it safe. Students returned to school an hour later.
