The Struggle to Rebuild the World Trade Towers

0

The 93-year-old commercial real estate developer Larry Silverstein is a remarkable man. He had the tenacity, vision, and expertise to overcome New York politicians and Port Authority bureaucrats to rebuild Lower Manhattan after the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

Silverstein tells the story of his trials and tribulations in his aptly titled book “The Rising:  The 20-year battle to rebuild the World Trade Center.”

After taking office in 1995, Gov. George Pataki announced that the World Trade Center Twin Towers were poorly managed by its overseers, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

And he was right.

A 400-page study prepared by Deloitte & Touche confirmed Pataki’s gut assessment. This scathing 1994 report documented the incompetence of the Trade Center’s management. Pataki directed the PA’s Board of Commissioners and the executive director (who happened to be me) to study options for the WTC—including privatization.

At the time, I believed Silverstein was the perfect choice because he had prior experience with the PA and understood its wily ways.

In the 1970s, Silverstein negotiated with the PA to construct a building on the remaining undeveloped piece of land in the WTC complex. Silverstein quickly learned that what should have been “a pretty quick and uncomplicated transaction” wasn’t.

Negotiations took over a year. “Unlike those of us in the private sector,” Silverstein observed, “[the PA] didn’t worry about deadlines, about negotiations dragging on as pre-construction costs continued to mount.”

But in Silverstein, the PA met its match. The PA relented and a deal was closed in 1980. The $300 million 7 WTC opened in 1987 and was a financial success.

When PA bureaucrats, after years of dawdling, finally issued a request for proposals to privatize the Towers in 2000, Silverstein entered the competition and circumvented all the PA’s obstacles. While he was awarded the 99-year lease, the final contact negotiations dragged on for another year.  Then on July 24, 2001, two days after the signing, Pataki handed Silverstein a key ring holding an oversized symbolic set of keys “to the front doors of my hard-fought for purchase.”

Weeks later, after the worst terrorist attack in America’s history, Silverstein told a shocked Pataki that “we need to rebuild. There’s not a doubt in my mind. We cannot allow the terrorists to win.”

Thus began Silverstein’s 20-year battle to rebuild the World Trade Center complex.

Instead of immediately turning to Silverstein—who still had to pay the PA $120 million a year rent—to design and rebuild the complex, the delusional Pataki was persuaded by his handlers that he could be dubbed the “Master Builder” of the 21st century if he held on to the rebuilding reins. It could, they claimed, enhance his third term prospects and jump-start a 2008 presidential candidacy.

To ensure Pataki’s control of the process, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, a state agency run by Pataki loyalists, was created to collect the federal funds earmarked for rebuilding and to control the political swag.

To achieve his rebuilding dream, Silverstein had to battle with the LMDC, the Pataki administration, the Port Authority, devious insurance companies, and a ludicrous Pataki-driven tower design by David Libeskind, who had not built anything bigger than a four-story building.

As the years dragged on, political columnist John Podhoretz wrote in 2005, “Through a poisonous combination of arrogance, indolence, cowardness, and foolishness, Pataki has made sure the crater created by Al Qaeda will remain unfulfilled for at least nine years….”

“Pataki’s Pit” was a national disgrace.

The governor’s fumbling played into the hands of the PA. The bureaucrats tried to reclaim direct control of the site and Pataki sided with them.

But the tenacious Silverstein refused to budge. And over time he beat Pataki and the PA bureaucrats.

Thanks to Larry Silverstein, today there are four gleaming towers on the site, and a magnificent memorial for our honored dead.

“All this stands,” Silverstein concludes in his memoir, “where there was once dust, charred rubble and the incinerated remains of those who tragically died that day.”

Silverstein has every reason to be proud of his accomplishment. And New Yorkers should be grateful that his first concerns were the Big Apple’s long-term needs—not those of interest groups and political hacks.

Our Town: The difference between men and women

ur

In the 1964 film “My Fair Lady” Rex Harrison sings: “Why can’t a woman be more like a man?” His student, Miss Eliza Doolittle, had triumphed at her coming out party but then fled for her life. This confused poor Professor Higgins and he sang the Lerner and Loewe song out of confusion and rage.

The conflicts produced by gender has been with us for ages. So let us elaborate on the differences between men and women.

As a guide, we can rely on the research out of Harvard Professor Carol Gilligan in her book “In a Different Voice.” Gilligan’s research suggests that there is a major difference between men and women and that women naturally emphasize relationships, love, and connection, and men emphasize achievement, competition, aggression and self-promotion.

An example of male self-promotion and female willingness to take a back seat and support her partner is in the 50-year relationship between French writer and philosopher Simone de Beauvoir and her partner, famed French existentialist Jean Paul Sartre. De Beauvoir’s brilliance in philosophy is understood by many but yet she is rarely given the credit for her contributions to existentialism. All credit goes to Sartre. She went on to write “The Second Sex,” which became a foundational work of feminism.

Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is credited for starting the science fiction genre yet during her lifetime she was known mostly as the wife of poet Percy Shelley and some even suggested that he wrote “Frankenstein” and not her.

I learned about the female character trait of connection and love many years ago while visiting my parents in Florida. My wife and I were staying in a nice hotel in Fort Lauderdale and I invited my mother and my sister to join us for brunch. It was to be a simple brunch for four. I was shocked when I saw two carloads of siblings, nephews and nieces arrive with my mother at the wheel. When I asked my mother why she had invited all the relatives, she said she didn’t want to leave anyone behind.

The male character is quite different and emphasizes competition, and separation rather than cooperation. Just sit around a table of men after a golf tournament and you will learn vast amounts about the male identity. The talk is about winning, courage, anger at missed shots, or other guys choking. Everyone is talking but no one is listening.

The masculine tendency to compete, achieve, and show off their powers is on bold display, just as Carol Gilligan suggested. To play in a grueling four-day golf event requires enormous will power, focus, strength and a sacrifice of time, energy and health.

The rewards for all this are not financial. Yet men jump into this crucible of pain with a smile. One must conclude that men are in some way biologically and unconsciously driven to compete and to win.

On the other hand, women are unconsciously driven to care for families. They are driven to cooperate and to love. Here again the rewards are not financial and the sacrifices made by women to maintain an organized household and raise children are enormous.

Last summer there was a perfect symmetry when “Oppenhiemer” and “Barbie” came out the same week. “Oppenheimer was about male destrudo or the death wish whereas “Barbie” was about female libido, love and sexuality. It takes two to tango, two to make a baby and two to live a good life.

Contests, food and more at this year’s Mineola Street Fair

The Mineola Chamber of Commerce promises a day of “family fun” at its annual street fair.

The fair, held Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will be located on Jericho Turnpike between Mineola Boulevard and Willis Avenue. Live music, entertainment and food by local restaurants and food trucks will be placed along the street. Family-fun attractions will be on the street all day, along with a classic car show and a celebrity dunk tank.

Tony Lubrano, head of the Mineola Street Fair committee and past president of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce, said this event will be community-oriented with many happenings that will get the community involved. Some of the events include a performance by the American Theater Dance Workshop at 11 a.m., a show by Taecole Tai Kuando at 11:20 a.m., a pancake eating contest sponsored by the Mineola Diner at 11:40 a.m., grand ceremony at 12:30 a.m., baby crawling contest at 1:20 p.m., a meatball eating contest at 1:40 p.m. sponsored by Spaghettini, a taco eating contest at 3:10 p.m. sponsored by Right Coast Taqueria and much more, including performances by local singers.

Lubrano said the chamber is still looking for more participants in the challenges at the fair. He said to apply email TonyLubrano@gmail.com

“What makes our street fair so different than any other is most street fairs are just focused on providing vendors on the street,” Lubrano said. “We look at it more like a community event and we try to do things that will give people a reason not to just walk the footprint of the fair and then go home.”

Lubrano said there will be two showmobiles with different bands playing all day long. At 11 a.m., Calliope Wren will perform, then Original Gossip at noon.  Following them will be the Tony Santos Band at 1 p.m. After them is Fuzz at 2 p.m., School of Rock at 3 p.m. and Sammy Louis Band at 4 p.m.

The North Shore Animal League will be bringing animals that are up for adoption on the showmobile as well.

Ardito’s Italian American Deli will return to the fair again this year, with chairs and tables set up so attendees can sit down while eating some of their deli foods. The Irish American Center will also be one of the dozens of food vendors at the fair.

“They put up a huge tent and they have Irish music playing, step-dancers, food and Guinness available all day,” Lubrano said.

There will be a designated food court by Dunkin’ Donuts where many of these food vendors will be located.

“The Village of Mineola, Paul Pereira and the trustees have always been involved and very supportive of this event,” Lubrano said. “They’re going to provide us with tables and chairs. They’re going to have the Public Works Department — in addition to doing all the sanitation, clean up and road closings that morning — they’re also going to bring out tables and chairs so that people have a place to sit and eat in that food truck area.”

Vendors can sign up at MineolaChamber.com. The rain date for the street fair is on Oct. 13.

Israel and Gaza at War: October 2023 was not October 1973

0

On Oct. 6, 1973, Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal and attacked Israeli forces in the Sinai Peninsula.  At the same time, Syria attacked Israel in the Golan Heights.  The war that came to be known as the Yom Kippur War raged for three weeks before Israel decisively defeated Egypt and Syria.

For Israel, victory came at a steep price.  It lost 2,800 of its soldiers killed-in-action plus many more grievously injured.  The population of Israel at the time was about one-third of its present-day population, approaching 10 million.

Egypt’s President Anwar Sadat believed the war was necessary for his people to regain their sense of national pride after a series of humiliating and costly defeats by Israel since its establishment as a state in 1948.  Sadat desperately wanted peaceful co-existence with Israel and he believed that a victory over Israel, as the Yom Kippur War was characterized in Egypt, would pave the way for his people to accept this status.

The early days after the conflict were fraught with a great deal of soul-searching, finger-pointing and anguish in Israel.  Why had its vaunted military been caught so off-guard, then turned early defeats into a stunning victory, only to concede what it had achieved militarily for a hoped-for diplomatic solution?

The answer to this latter point was that Israel could take a view that Sadat was sincere in his stated desire to find a peaceful resolution.  A view that no doubt was influenced by Egypt’s conduct during the war, which for the most part adhered to international standards for conducting warfare and the treatment of prisoners.

Fifty years later, in the period leading up to October 2023, Israel was deceived into believing that it was heading toward a de-escalated relationship with Gaza.  Israel supplied Gaza with much of its drinking water and electricity.

Israel provided work permits to 20,000 Gazans, which created a very positive economic result for both nations- for Gaza, a solution to its chronic high unemployment, and for Israel, a source of low-cost labor to address its chronic labor shortages.   Moreover, increasing numbers of Gazans traveled to Israel to receive medical treatment due to the abysmal level of care available in Gaza.

The attack on Israel by Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, was not an act of belligerent nations going to war to accomplish what they had failed to resolve diplomatically.  Gaza has been a sovereign state since 2005.

In 2007, its people elected Hamas to be its government.  It is one of the largest recipients of foreign aid (adjusted for population).  It received an estimated $2 billion to $3 billion from Iran toward the construction of a system of tunnels running several hundreds of miles—money that could have been better spent to build out its infrastructure and provide basic services to its people.  If it had a grievance with Israel, it would have been difficult to define other than Israel’s right to exist as a sovereign nation.

Oct. 7, 2023, was an act of terrorism instigated by one state against another.  The targets of the attack were civilians—children, the elderly, concertgoers, women—all non-combatants.

The Gazan terrorists recorded their evil deeds with their Gopro cameras, almost as if to chronical with pride the rapes, mutilations, and murders carried out against their innocent victims.  The Israelis taken into captivity that day further added to the barbarism perpetrated by Gaza against Israel.

As if the horrific acts of October 2023 were not enough, Hamas has since vowed to carry out more attacks against Israel until every Jew is exterminated.

In 1973, President Sadat grieved over the human toll on Egypt arising from its wars with Israel and desired an end to the bloodshed.  He paid dearly for his hopeful vision that peace with Israel could be attained.

Sadat was assassinated in 1981 by Muslim extremists who could not countenance his acceptance of the Jewish state.  His legacy was a durable peace with Israel and something that would have been thought impossible in 1973, the establishment of diplomatic relations with Israel in 1980.

The current war with Gaza will be far less costly for Israel in terms of the human toll (when adjusted for population size) than the Yom Kippur War in 1973.  But the atrocities perpetrated by Gazans against innocent civilians in Israel in 2023 defy description and make it unlikely that Israel will find among Hamas a well-meaning counter partner with which to negotiate a peaceful resolution.

Hamas is a terror organization with a death grip on a failed state.  It openly advocates for the murder of Israelis and Jews throughout the world.  And Hamas celebrates the death of Gazan civilians as if they are merely a means of achieving this goal.

In short, victory for Israel will more likely be patterned after the Allies victory in World War II.  A victory that was achieved only after the utter destruction of the Nazi regime in Germany and the militarists in Japan.

Unfortunately, like the rulers of Germany and Japan in World War II, Hamas is the embodiment of evil and many more Gazans will be lost before peace is achieved.

Floral Park-Bellerose School second graders participated in a Dot Tower Challenge in the Discovery Lab on Sept. 20.

After listening to a read-aloud of “The Dot” by Peter Reynolds, the students were introduced to the concept of a growth mindset, which is the belief that skills and abilities can improve through hard work and assistance from others. The students were challenged to work in groups and use a growth mindset to build the tallest tower from dot stickers and index cards.

Students built towers from dot stickers and index cards.

When the students were finished building, they were encouraged to reflect on their results and come up with a plan to improve their design. The students were then able to create the tower a second time, using their observations from the first challenge to potentially improve their results.

Student Theater Arts Company students get right to the point

At Herricks High School, students in the Student Theater Arts Company got right to the point on day one with a lesson on stage combat.

The class started by watching famous sword fight scenes from classic films released long before the students were born, including “The Princess Bride,” “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and “Star Wars.” They dissected each scene, discussing the mood, dialog and choreography that made each of them unique and memorable.

Then, wielding foam prop swords, the students learned basic attacks, defenses and parries, then choreographed their own fight sequences.

Unlike a sport like fencing, the goal of stage combat is to not hit your partner. Safety comes first as you tell the story through swashbuckling.

Six students from The Wheatley School, part of the East Williston School District, earned the opportunity to showcase their artworks in the prestigious New York State School Boards Association Exhibit.

The annual virtual art exhibit highlights the creativity of students from elementary and secondary schools across the state.

The students selected for the honor are juniors Gillian Roberts and Audrey Rogan; seniors Audrey Chen, Dylan Kaufman and Elyse Yan; and freshman Reagan Dunn. Their works will be featured in the exhibit, which begins on Oct. 20. School board members attending the NYSSBA Convention from Oct. 20 to 22 in New York City will view the student artworks in person, while the virtual art exhibit will accessible online through Dec. 31.

The NYSSBA Exhibit, sponsored by the New York State Art Teachers Association, is designed to celebrate student creativity, and foster an appreciation for the arts among school board members. It also provides students with a platform to see their artwork displayed alongside peers from across the state, encouraging further engagement and inspiration in the arts.
