Trump is a sore loser, vote for Harris

0

By Geraldo Rivera

With three weeks to go until Election Day, Donald Trump stands a reasonable chance of becoming the 47th president of the United States. Despite assassination attempts, impeachments, special counsels, felony convictions and hundreds of millions in civil penalties, most polls show his race against V.P. Kamala Harris is too close to call.

The first time he ran for president in 2016, he was coming off the last season of “Celebrity Apprentice.” I had a front row seat as a finalist on that final season and marveled at his audacity with his checkered past to seek the highest office in the land. Then, in the blink of an eye, he went from novice to formidable challenger to victorious over Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

As president he was a loyal friend, who allowed regular access. My resulting coverage gave him the benefit of most doubts. Throughout his first big scandal in office, the 2017-2019 Mueller Investigation into allegations Trump conspired with Russia to undermine our political process, I stuck with him, deeply suspicious of constant efforts to undermine his administration.

The last time President Trump and I spoke was Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, when he called me at home. It was 10 days after his narrow loss to Joe Biden. He was calling to get my take on the controversies surrounding the election, which appeared to have been decided by a handful of votes in several states. I asked him what he would do if the vote count remained against him. As I reported on Fox News that same morning, Friday, the 13th, he told me he was a reasonable man and would do the right thing if that time came.

It never did. Instead, President Trump embarked on an increasingly menacing campaign to discredit the 2020 election. With a motley supporting cast of increasingly fringe characters, he careened from one bizarre theory to the next, offering no meaningful proof that he had been robbed by the Democrats.

None exists. If you are a Republican, Donald Trump has made a liar of you. He has coaxed and intimidated tens of millions into pretending he was re-elected in 2020, and that the election was stolen.

In furtherance of that lie, on Jan. 6, 2021, Trump incited and unleashed the violent attack on the center of democracy, the U.S. Capitol, for which he was impeached. As his followers trashed that sacred space, he was on the phone urging Vice President Mike Pence essentially to overturn the will of the American people. Pence refused to put Trump ahead of the Constitution. Trump stabbed the Constitution in the back.

Maybe you are inclined to vote for the former president anyway, because he says he will cut your taxes or build the border wall or pull out of NATO or put tariffs on China. However, you justify voting for Trump, adopting his big lie about the stolen election makes you a liar.

Better to admit he lost last time but that you don’t care because a Harris presidency would be a disaster, or you admire his defiance in the face of an assassin’s bullet. Just don’t pretend that he got robbed in 2020. That is a lie.

Former President Trump is a sore loser who cannot be trusted to honor the Constitution. That is why I am voting for Kamala Harris to be our 47th president.

Oct. 21 marked the 11th anniversary of the passing of 1972 losing Democratic Party presidential candidate South Dakota Senator George McGovern.  He was ahead of his time in his race against Republican President Richard Nixon. McGovern’s platform included ending the Vietnam War.  It also called for spending the billions wasted on the war to rebuild America, along with saving lives by bringing the troops home.
McGovern was too proud to emphasis his military experience as a decorated World War II bomber pilot.  Nixon attempted to portray him as soft on national defense.

Since 2001 we have spend almost $7 trillion between our involvement in various international nation-building adventures in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and Ukraine wars.  There was also the loss of 7,000 American military along with additional  private military contractors employed to assist in the fighting. Thousands more suffer day to day with permanent physical injuries.
Was it worth spending the dollars and lives?  What we have gotten in return?

Carle Place bond vote to cover new HVAC systems, UPK classes

Two propositions to be voted on Oct. 24 in the Carle Place School District would finance various capital improvement work through a bond referendum and authorization to use capital reserve funds.

Community members aired their opinions for and against these propositions at the community forum last Thursday. Joanna DeMartino, the district’s assistant superintendent of business, presented the ballot at the meeting, which will contain two separate propositions.

Proposition No. 1 calls for replacing the existing heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems at Carle Place Middle and High School. The existing heating plants at both schools are approximately 35 years old. The current capital reserve balance is less than the funding required to complete a project of this magnitude, which is why it’s being proposed for a bond vote.

“The new heating and air conditioning systems will be highly efficient and will include dedicated outdoor air systems that condition and clean the air in the classrooms,” according to a press release. “New heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems will be added to the gymnasiums. Improvements also include replacing the building’s suspended ceilings and installing LED lighting.”

The district will receive approximately 16.4 percent of the total cost of proposition No. 1 from the New York State Building Aid. Of the total cost $3 million will be funded through the district’s capital reserve fund, while the remaining $10 million will be financed through a bond. The estimated impact to taxpayers for proposition No. 1 is approximately $12.82 on an average annual tax bill.

The second proposition includes the construction of a five-classroom extension on Cherry Lane Elementary School for the purpose of housing the district’s Universal Pre-Kindergarten program. The district launched its UPK program this year, which takes place in the newly renovated high school math and science room. The total cost of proposition No. 2 is approximately $6 million, which would be funded through a bond.

“The reason why we’re proposing a five-classroom extension is that in a regular year, we have five classes of kindergarten or five classes of second grade or five classes of fifth grade so it stands to reason that five classes of pre-K students would roll over the next year and cover five classes of kindergarten,” Ted Cannone, superintendent of the Carle Place School District, said.

If proposition No. 1 passes and proposition No. 2 fails, proposition No. 1 will still pass.

“If only proposition No. 1 passes, the district will need a $10 million bond and will utilize $3 million from our existing capital reserves to account for the full $13M cost of this project,” according to CPS.k12.ny.us.

However, if proposition No. 1 fails and proposition No. 2 passes, both will fail.

Many community members said the schools can accommodate UPK classes without constructing new classrooms. Cannone said if the vote fails, at least one more class can be added to the existing buildings.

“If the UPK part of this fails, then we’re going to have to reconsider what, how, when, if we expand,” Cannone said. “We could probably squeeze in another section, another class in. I think we can fit two. After that, we’re stuck for space and we would have to regroup from here.”

These propositions would result in a net annual increase of approximately $77.77 for the average taxpayer.

On CPS.k12.ny.us/page/bond-vote-2024, you can view the district’s “Bond Estimated Tax Impact Calculator” to see how much your taxes will increase if propositions No. 1 and 2 or just 1 pass.

According to the district, proposition No. 1 would last 15 years and No. 2 would last over 20 years.

The vote will be held from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Carle Place High School multipurpose room on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Antisemitic mailer depicting Blakeman sent on Jewish holiday eve

The CSEA Union’s local 830 division, part of one of the largest unions in New York, sent out a mailer depicting Bruce Blakeman, the first Jewish executive of Nassau County, with horns on his head.

The mailer was sent Oct. 11, one day before Yom Kippur, which is the holiest holiday in Judaism. Horns depicted on Jews is an antisemitic stereotype that started in medieval times. Alongside the image of Blakeman was information on the union’s health insurance coverage, which is part of a months-long dispute between Blakeman and the union.

“Bruce Blakeman is trying to replace your negotiated health insurance with a subpar insurance plan behind your back,” the mailer said. “But he wants you to believe it’s CSEA’s fault.”

Also on the front of the mailer was a headline that “The Devil is in the Detail” and a speech bubble next to Blakeman saying, “we’ll make them pay more and not even tell them.”

“As antisemitism reaches unprecedented levels, this is appalling from CSEA Local 830 — targeting the first Jewish Nassau County Executive with this bile the day before Yom Kippur begins,” the Republican Jewish Coalition said on X. “Shameful. CSEA must immediately apologize to Nassau Executive Bruce Blakeman and disavow this mailer.”

Chris Boyle, a spokesman for Blakeman, called it “despicable” that with all the antisemitism present,  the union would depict Blakeman with horns.

“Blakeman will not capitulate to the union’s demands for a different healthcare provider that they didn’t bargain for, which would cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars,” Boyle said in a press release.

Blakeman and the union have been battling over health insurance coverage for about 4,200 county employees since the summer. Newsday reported that the feud escalated two weekends ago through direct emails between Blakeman and union leadership.

CSEA members agreed last year to move from the state’s Empire Plan to the Excelsior Plan, saving the county about $280 million over their 13-year contract in exchange for wage increases and signing bonuses.

However, Aurora Scifo, vice president of CSEA Local 830, said Blakeman “quietly informed” NYS Civil Service on Aug. 26 that they would not be transitioning Excelsior-covered employees to the Empire Plan on Jan. 1, kicking them out of the New York State Health Insurance Program completely.

“The county did not notify the union as required,” Scifo said on Facebook. “The county plans to enroll the CSEA employees in a very high deductible plan which provides inferior coverage at a much higher cost to the employee, which violates our contract.”

In a letter dated Oct. 6 to all active CSEA county employees, Newsday reported Blakeman assured them that Anthem would provide health coverage beginning on Jan. 1.

Long Island construction booming, study finds

0
Babylon LIRR

By

Long Island is experiencing a building boom ranging from transit-oriented development to home renovations, according to a new report on significant industries by the New York State Department of Labor.

Certain manufacturing sectors also are growing, bucking a trend and what some might see as conventional but, in this case, incorrect wisdom.

The 23-page report, which focused on 13 “significant industries” based on employment and other factors, said “construction activity is booming on Long Island” including dozens of transit-oriented mixed-use developments, multi-family housing projects and a home renovation surge.

The report identified 13 industries accounting for 56% of the region’s jobs, including eight sectors whose employment grew from 2018 to 2023 and 10 that employed at least 12,500 in 2023.

The sectors fell into eight major industry groups including construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation, and utilities; financial activities; professional and business services ; educational services; healthcare and social assistance; and leisure and hospitality.

Manufacturing jobs

The report cited some manufacturing sectors as going strong, which might surprise some after long manufacturing losses.

Chemical manufacturing, with 13,800 workers, employed the most people in the manufacturing sector in 2023, adding nearly 20 businesses and 700 jobs since 2018, primarily in pharmaceuticals and supplements.

“The industry, which employs a large number of scientists and researchers, tends to be high paying,” the report noted regarding the sector with an average wage of $76,800 in 2023.

Education and healthcare

The report cited educational services as the region’s largest employer, including those working in125 school districts with 414,000 students enrolled in the 2022-23 school year, and 25 colleges and universities.

“The expansion of pre-K enrollment should continue to create more positions within the field,” according to the report.

Healthcare is continuing to grow amid an aging population  as hospitals continue “to rank among the largest employers on Long Island,” with the second highest wages at $105,000, of the region’s significant industries.

Ambulatory health care services is “one of the fastest growing segments of the healthcare industry,” adding 18,500 jobs between 2018 and 202.

High on hospitality

Long Island leisure and hospitality, a $6.6 billion tourism industry with 100,300 employees in 2023, also ranked among significant sectors. Food services and drinking places, part of this sector, was one of the hardest hit industries during the COVID-19 pandemic, losing 21.6% of its jobs in 2020, according to the report.

“It quickly regained the jobs lost and is currently above pre-pandemic levels,” according to the study, which projects food and drinking service employment to nearly double, growing by 94.1%,  between 2020 and 2030.

Due to the “predominance of low paying and low skilled occupations within the industry,” it had the lowest average annual wage of industries in this report at $32,000 in 2023.

The building boom

The report, however, painted construction as amid a big post-pandemic boom including new buildings and renovation, as well as infrastructure improvements, including sewers, roads, and bridges “boosting construction activity.”

Heavy and civil engineering construction experienced the fastest employment growth in the sector between 2018 and 2023. That subgroup has an average annual wage of $129,600, 74.7% higher than the $74,200 region’s all-industry average wage.

In Long Island’s construction sector, 67.8% of jobs are with specialty trade contractors, composed mainly of small businesses with two thirds of employers having four or fewer employees.

“Several factors have contributed to the increased demand for specialty trade contractors,” according to the report, which cited an aging housing stock combined with record-high home prices.

The report said this “resulted in increased renovations of existing homes,” while scarce real estate led to the “repurposing of existing commercial properties.”

Healthy building

The region’s healthcare industry has “also been undergoing several expansion and renovation projects,” fueling construction. Healthcare systems are renovating vacant retail properties to build outpatient care facilities.

”Several of the region’s health care systems have been renovating and expanding local hospitals, as well as opening new outpatient care facilities,” according to the report.

Weak demand for suburban office space, meanwhile, is leading to the transformation of lower quality office spaces for industrial and residential uses.

Education is fueling construction with schools such as Hofstra University, Farmingdale State College, Nassau Community College, and Suffolk County Community College having undergone “multimillion dollar capital programs,” according to the report.

Building the future

The federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which passed in 2021, the report noted, “will continue to deliver billions of dollars to fund local infrastructure projects through 2026.” Those include investments in aging highways, roads, bridges, water infrastructure, and improving regional airports.

The offshore wind industry, including upgrades to the onshore electrical transmission system, also will “benefit the heavy and civil engineering construction industry.”

The report also concluded that the construction industry will likely generate both demand and opportunity for jobs.

“Over the next decade, the impending retirement of many baby boomers will contribute to job opportunities in this industry, especially among the skilled trades,” according to the report.

Our Town: The ‘as-if’ personality of famous actors

0
Actors are always on stage (photo by Tom Ferraro)

Al Pacino has been in the news lately, with television appearances and a cover story in the New York Times Sunday Magazine as he promotes his new book “Sonny Boy.”

We who work or live in Williston Park were lucky enough to see him in the flesh as he arrived for the shooting of Martin Scorsese’ “The Irishman.”

I had a chance to talk to him and he had the persona of a scared bird with very alert hyper vigilant eyes. Like a squirrel was about the bounce on him.

Over the years I have met many famous people and they are different from normal people. In the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco I met the famed jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis after one of his performances and he had that same jittery, frightened look about him as well. And other famous artists are the same.

Dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham looked scared to me when I met him. The actor and writer Spalding Gray was my friend and he managed to control his anxiety by writing or also by sedating himself. Naomi Watts filmed “The Book of Henry” in Williston Park and she had that same look of fear.

When I met Robert Downey Jr. a few weeks ago at the Carlyle Hotel, he looked far more self-assured, but that may be because he had his 6-foot-4 body guard next to him at all times.

Pacino alluded to the character structure of great actors when he said that “I’m in the moment, and whatever’s in the moment is who I am.”

This refers to what Helene Deutsch called the “as if” personality, where the person acts as if they have intense emotions (“Hoo-ah!”) in order to deny inner emptiness and coldness.

More common names for this character trait are borderline, false self, the depersonalized self, or impostor syndrome. With the great actors , they have taken this character deficiency and successfully used it to create a wonderful career that we as fans can enjoy.

They easily embody the character they are playing since they have no real personality to get in the way of their role.

This trait may explain what happened to Will Smith at the Oscars when he grew incensed over a Chris Rock joke about alopecia, walked on to the stage and smacked him the face in front of a live audience of more than 20 million viewers.

During his acceptance speech he apologized and made a comment that he may have been possessed by the spirit of crazy Richard Williams, who he had just played in the film “King Richard,” the movie about the Serena and Venus Williams family.

I think that the great actors totally immerse themselves into their roles and it takes them time to return to “normal.”

Years ago I was at a dinner party with a television actor from the television series CSI. He was a quiet, passive type of guy and just for laughs I asked him if he would play-act a role with me where I was his psychoanalyst and he was a crime boss in therapy with me.

He said yes and as we got into the scene, he changed before my eyes from this quiet meek type of guy into a malevolent, terrifying crime boss. It scared me so much I stopped the game.

Each famous actor or artist has a special gift which partly derives from a defect and partly from talent.

They all have managed to convert these deficiencies into a gift they give to the world and for that we must be grateful and give them thanks.

They have an exquisite sensitivity that they have converted into a career that gives them all that fame.

From the Right: Vote ‘No’ on Proposition One

New York State has on its books the most egregious abortion law in the nation. It codifies partial birth abortion, which the late New York Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, described “as close to infanticide as anything I have come upon.”

But that law is not enough for the radicals who control the state Legislature.

In 2022 and 2023, the Democrats engineered the passage of a legislative resolution—that does not require the approval of the governor—to place on the election ballot a so-called Equal Rights Amendment.

Following the State Constitution, the resolution was approved by two consecutive legislatures in 2022 and 2023. However, instead of placing the amendment on the off-year November 2023 election ballot, the Legislature made an unprecedented maneuver—it delayed placement until 2024, a presidential and legislative election year when turnout of leftists is much higher.

The amendment, known as “Proposition One,” has two parts. The first paragraph changes the 1938 equal protection language that forbids discrimination based on “race, color, creed, or religion.”  It adds the following protected classes: “ethnicity, national origins, age, disability…or sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, pregnancy outcome, and reproductive health care and autonomy.”

The inclusion of the terms, “gender identity” and “gender expression,” opens the door for biological males, who feel like women, to participate in female sports.

The amendment would permit public school administrators and teachers to aid children seeking gender transitions without parental consent. It would also allow minors to pursue hormonal treatments and sex changing surgery. And it may make New York a permanent Sanctuary State.

The second paragraph in the amendment is also dangerous. It reads:

Nothing in this section shall invalidate or prevent the adoption of any law, regulation, program, or practice that is designed to prevent or dismantle discrimination on the basis of a characteristic listed in this section, nor shall any characteristic listed in the section be interpreted to interfere with, limit, or deny the civil rights of any person based upon any other characteristic identified in this section.

The italicized words could open Pandora’s Box. That intersectional code language would prohibit the considering of merit. For example, New York City’s top public high schools (i.e., Bronx School of Science) would have to eliminate competitive entrance examinations. This would reverse discrimination against hardworking students who study and master academic subjects.

The interpretive legislative memo, attached to the proposal by supporters in the state Legislature, clearly states that the intent is to “prevent or dismantle structural forms of inequality and discrimination on the basis of protected characteristics like race or sex.”

The memo also boasts that the amendment would expand “the list of classes affirmatively protected by New York Constitution in recognition of the need for comprehensive, and enforceable, and intersectional equality under the law.”

What you may ask is “intersectionality”?

The term was coined by the “critical race theory” professor, Kimberle Crenshaw in 1989. The theory alleges that minorities, women, LGBTQ, disabled, etc. are not individual persons but are collections of overlapping oppressed identities entitled to special rights and privileges.

That means this Constitutional amendment could threaten equal rights by giving the state Legislature the license to practice reverse discrimination in order “to prevent or dismantle discrimination.” “In other words,” The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights has noted “it could be OK to discriminate against white applicants for a job if by doing so it would enhance the chances of people of color landing the position.”

Under this amendment the state Legislature would be able to pass laws that would create new forms of discrimination, including set asides, quotas, and reparations. It would promote and foster the excesses of “wokeness” and DEI at the expense of every person’s rights.

The Proposition 1 Constitutional Amendment that will appear on the Election Day voting ballot is harmful for all New Yorkers.

Make sure you vote “NO” on Nov. 5.

Great Neck Library lecture: Surrealism and the Frontiers Within presented by Dennis Raverty

Utilizing techniques from Freud’s contemporaneous psychoanalysis, the surrealists viewed the First World War as a societal “nervous breakdown” in an explosion of aggression.

These artists descended into the unconscious mind, producing art with dreamlike juxtapositions.

However irrational their results, they had hoped that by giving free artistic expression to repressed desire, they could channel the aggression of the war harmlessly into their art, poetry, film and performance.

Dennis Raverty is a speaker, author and art historian who for decades has delighted audiences with lively presentations at libraries, churches, synagogues, hostels and business lunches on a variety of topics in the history of art, from the Italian Renaissance to the Harlem Renaissance.

His articles and criticism have appeared inArt Journal, Art in America, The International Review of African American Art, Art Criticism, The New Art Examiner, Prospects: An Annual of American Studies, Source: Notes in the History of Art, and Art Papers, where he was a contributing editor.

He authored four entries for the most recent edition of the Grove Encyclopedia of American Art, published by Oxford University Press in 2011.
