Readers Write: Why I should be elected to the Legislature

2013 is a critical year in the annals of Nassau County.

A Republican-dominated county government which lurches its way from one crisis to another, with no leadership in either the executive or legislative spheres, now faces fiscal meltdown.

As a concerned citizen, I can no longer remain silent in the face of these challenges to our suburban way of life.

Instead of visions of progress and reform, the county government presents its people with one harebrained scheme after another to raise revenue. Meanwhile, our quality of life has suffered greatly. We are not better off than we were four years ago.

My Background: Civic activist, first woman mayor of East Williston, business owner and mother. While I was mayor I expanded village services while making major capital improvements, retired municipal debt and modernized village government.

I was also treasurer and executive director of the Nassau County Village Officials Association. As community services representative for the Nassau County Department of Assessment, I created programs involving community outreach to Nassau County taxpayers. In order to bring government closer to the people, I scheduled hundreds of meetings with residents all around the county.

I have also served as director of Legislative and Public Affairs for the Town of North Hempstead.

My goals: Make Nassau County government work again! We start by electing Democrat Tom Suozzi as county executive as well as through electing a Democratic County Legislature. Then, together we can work to overcome the county’s imbalanced budget.

Other areas that require intelligent government include reforming the county-wide assessment system for both residential and commercial properties, maintaining basic services (such as parks, sewer systems, transportation, highways, the police and services for our veterans and seniors) while keeping proper stewardship over the environment. The Nassau Hub area must be developed in a smart and economical fashion.

We must encourage the growth of workforce housing to encourage our young people to stay in Nassau County now and in the future. I will work hard to foster the twin engines of economic prosperity: job creation and economic development.

Conservative budgeting can and will co-exist with a progressive and compassionate government.

Dolores Sedacca
