Readers Write: Mailbox theft and street lights

I recently had checks that I had placed in the mailbox at the corner of Glenmore Street and Bengeyfield Drive stolen.

Checks were “washed” and new amounts and payees were written in and withdrawn from my account. I am writing to you to ask you to alert other residents of our community of these situations and to also please look at the street light that is opposite this mailbox that isn’t currently working.

I know an unlit street light is not what causes mailbox theft, but it certainly is a contributing factor that allows criminal activity under the “cloud of darkness.” Is there a program and/or guideline that our town follows to maintain streetlights?  Is there a scheduled patrol that checks to make sure street lights are working? I have reported this to USPS & NCPD also.
