Waterzooi closes in Port Washington after three years

Waterzooi, the Belgian restaurant serving up mussels, fries and beer, closed its doors in Port Washington July 30 after three years of serving the community.

In a voicemail set up on the restaurant’s Port Washington phone line, the owners thanked the community for their support and for the patrons who joined them during their last weekend in Port Washington.

“We are overwhelmed by the show of support,” the voicemail states. “We are so thankful to our amazing staff and to the community for welcoming us into Port Washington.”

The restaurant’s Garden City location, the original Waterzooi restaurant now approaching its 25th anniversary, is still open for regular patrons to continue experiencing their dining.

Waterzooi Port Washington gift cards will be accepted at the Garden City restaurant.

Newsday reported that owner Ed Davis said he and the other owners were approached by a Long Island restaurant group looking to open in Port Washington. Davis told Newsday that the restaurant group made them an offer they could not refuse.

Efforts to contact the owners of Waterzooi were unavailing.
