Port Washington resident, HarborView leader dies at 84

Anita Better, a Port Washington resident who served as vice president of the HarborView Owners Association and president of the Addison Board of Managers, died at 84.

Better was born on Sept. 5, 1938. She had been a resident of the HarborView community since July 2013. There, she aided with many projects aimed at the well-being and common good of homeowners in her community.

She served as the first vice president of the Home Owners Association Board of Managers representing the Addison Building. She was also the board liaison to the Health Club Committee to ensure that the gym programs and facilities meet HarborView’s needs.

In addition, she worked with the board president to manage the fitness center services and their indoor and outdoor pools. She also worked with the subcommittee to renovate, improve and update the locker rooms in the indoor pool facility at HarborView.

She formerly worked as a chief technology officer and residency officer at the K-12 level. Prior to that, she was the director of technology at Hunter College and Lehman College. During that time, she worked on an Americans with Disabilities Act subcommittee to offer suitable technology to disabled academics, staff and students.

Better is survived by her two daughters, Donna Better and Rona Lynn Gundrum.
